Design Consideration and Performance Analysis of a Hybrid Islanding Detection Method Combining Voltage Unbalance/Total Harmonic Distortion and Bilateral Reactive Power Variation

Abstract: This paper proposes a hybrid islanding detection method for inverter-based distributed generation units. Firstly, this paper carries out a comprehensive characteristic analysis and obtains design principles for the hybrid method in inverterbased DGs. Then, based on these principles, the proposed method combines the passive method of voltage unbalance and total harmonic distortion (VU/THD) detection and the active method of bilateral reactive power variation (BRPV). In specific, the BRPV method is only triggere… Show more

“…Also, the minimum values of APM and RPM mismatches are required for detecting islands. To overcome the above issues, hybrid methods [24,25] combination of active and passive IDMs was reported. Hybrid IDMs acquire the salient feature of both methods; hence, they possess small NDZ with reasonable island detection time.…”

“…This paper claims an accuracy of 69-89% on single and multi-inverter systems respectively with a THD of 1.32%. Other recently developed methods include [39] and [40] which uses comprehensive characteristic analysis of voltage unbalances and THD for islanding detection.…”

“…However, this IDM identifies the islanding event in a time duration of two cycles. In [12], the authors proposed a hybrid IDM that combines the passive IDM of voltage unbalance and total harmonic distortion (VU/THD) with an active approach based on bilateral reactive power variation (BRPV). This effectively identifies the islanding event in the presence of inverter-based DG units with improved performance.…”
