Design choices for the IoT in Information-Centric Networks

Abstract: This paper outlines the tradeoffs involved in utilizing Information-Centric Networking (ICN) for Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. It describes contexts and applications where the IoT would benefit from ICN, and where a hostcentric approach would be better. Requirements imposed by the heterogeneous nature of IoT networks are discussed in terms of connectivity, power availability, computational and storage capacity. Design choices are then proposed for an IoT architecture to handle these requirements, while p… Show more

“…IBM has its own cloud-based solution for IoT using the IBM Watson IoT plaftorm [3]. ICN has received more attention in recent years, as it offers interesting features for IoT solutions due to its in-network caching and computing, de-centralization or energy efficiency (e.g., [19][20][21]).…”

“…It is our intuition that ICN could conveniently organize distributed caching of IoT content near each producer, so that fewer IoT devices would have to be active, while others can sleep and data would still be available locally, at any time. Recent work [5,20,21,29] has shown potential for ICN in the Internet of Things. In addition, the convergence of ICN on TSCH promises further improvements of RDC [15].…”

“…The immutability condition here is important as it prevents cache inconsistencies. A mapping from time to sequence numbers and a way to map the context of data to unique names are assumed to be defined by the producers and advertised through capability advertisements [17]. To improve caching performance for such data, we propose a new caching policy in Section 4.2.…”
