Design approach for post-buckled beams in bistable piezoelectric energy harvesters

Abstract: This paper presents a model suited for the design of mechanically bistable beams used in Piezoelectric EnergyHarvesters (PEHs). The proposed model accounts for the bending and compression of post-buckled beams used in the PEH. The effect of the beam's geometry on the generated power and frequency bandwidth is evaluated with a performance criterion. It is concluded that a low beam compression stiffness can have a negative impact on the performance of the PEH and that the bending stiffness solely implies a prest… Show more

“…When considering the 4 identical beams and assuming symmetry around the inertial mass, the equivalent stiffnesses of the 4 beams are equal to 4 and , as shown in a previous study [7]. The spring and both APAs are represented in the equivalent system represented in Figure 3 Figure 3: Schematic representation of the equivalent system Static mechanics considerations dictate that if the elements of a system are in series, the forces each isolated element of the system is subjected to, as well as the force applied on the equivalent system, are equal.…”

“…When 2 3 equals 1, the equations obtained are the ones described by Huguet et al [6] given by (13), seeing as the value of the tuning APA's voltage & is a constant. This implies a bigger bandwidth but a lower maximum power output if the rest of the normalized parameters of the harvester are fixed (including the quality factor) as seen in Morel et al's work [8] and in a previous study [7]. In conclusion, the proposed lumped model shows that the stiffness only affects feasibility.…”

“…The analytical resolution of this system gives way to an expression of the theoretical normalized admittance ⌣ Y = I jCpω , similar to the one proposed by Kim et al [38]. This expression of the theoretical normalized admittance ⌣ Y, given by (36), is fitted to the experimental response in order to deduce the values of (k 2 m , Q m , ω 0 )…”

“…In addition, the values of the length L, width l z and thickness l y of the rectangular straight section of the post-buckled beams are provided in table 1. These dimensions allow us to determine the bending and axial extension stiffnesses K b and K a of the beams, using the formulas given by ( 38) and mentioned in [36], with E APX4 the young modulus of the steel used to manufacture the beams…”
