Design and Implementation of an OCC-Based Real-Time Heart Rate and Pulse-Oxygen Saturation Monitoring System

Abstract: In this technical paper, we design and implement an optical camera communication system for real-time remote monitoring of patient's heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) data. The data is collected and transmitted by a patch circuit which comprises a MAX30102 sensor and an RGB LED array. A close circuit television camera is used not only for surveillance but also for receiving the data simultaneously. The LED is modulated using color intensities, and the data can be retrieved regardless of any orient… Show more

“…Considering that MAX30102 is a highly functional and reliable sensing module whose applicability in medical devices is widely reported and of acknowledged validation, the adequate functioning was an expected finding [13]. Moreover, the operation of the device followed the reliability described by other authors who communicated development platforms, such as the one herein used with MAX30102 [20,23]. In addition, the webserver capabilities of ESP32 were adequate to a single-user setting, taking into account the memory limits of this SoC.…”

“…OCC is already used in eHealth [3], indoor positioning [4] [5], V2X communication system [6] etc. In [7], authors collected data from pulse oximeter sensors from the human body, but did not consider motion from the transmitter and the system was quite unstable. Motion control based system is designed in [8], and this system used a neural network to reduce BER.…”

“…Patients with infectious diseases such as SARS, MERS, Covid-19, diphtheria, cholera, tuberculosis (TB), HIV/AIDS require treatment in special isolation rooms and their health must be monitored regularly by measuring body temperature, blood pressure, oxygen in the blood, and heart rate [1], [2], [3], [4]. WHO applies a safe protocol for nurses when monitoring the patient's condition without meeting directly in the treatment room, so a tool is needed that can monitor the patient's condition simultaneously without direct contact in order to maintain the quality of life and health status of patients and medical personnel.…”
