In this digital age, ports face stiff competition in global supply chain. Smart ports, as high performing ports, utilize information and communications technology (ICT) to provide a wide range of smart applications, resulting in vastly improved vessels and container management among others, which subsequently improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the national economy. While various novel solutions, such as information system and locating system, have been proposed to improve smart port activities, there are several key issues pertaining to ports and port operations that warrant specific attention, particularly greenhouse gases emission, which has accelerated to an alarming level. The urgent need to address such issues is lacking. This article aims to offer a review of the research literature on smart ports, including Internet of Things platform, greenhouse gases emission reduction, energy efficiency enhancement, and so on. The objective is to establish a foundation of existing research conducted on smart ports in order to motivate new research interests in this area. Open issues are also presented to foster new research initiatives on smart ports.

In a port terminal, containers are stored and transshipped by yard tractors and cranes. Information on the location of these vehicles is an essential factor for efficient operation of the terminal. However, most port terminals try to estimate the location of these assets using indirect methods such as event locating of shipping or unshipping containers. Because these kinds of events do not occur often, the location of the event triggered includes serious location error, as it is different from the real location of the vehicle. In this paper, we propose a real-time asset locating system that accurately and reliably obtains the location of terminal assets. The proposed system overcomes location estimation errors caused by container stacks disrupting wireless communication. In order to mitigate uncertainty and increase the accuracy of the location estimate, we designed hardware and a multi-step locating system to resolve additional problems. We implemented the system components, and installed the system at a port environment for evaluation. Our results indicate that our proposed system has a locating error level of approximately 5.87 m and that it is superior to existing systems.

As logistics has grown dramatically, container port terminals become heavily congested in the loading, unloading, and processing of containers into and out of port terminals currently. So, there is a growing need for a design of a location-based smart port terminal. In port terminals, especially, valuable time can be saved by recognizing precisely where the nearest available containers or mobile equipment can be found. A real time locating system (RTLS) is a novel technology which estimates and tracks mobile objects and personal. However, RTLSs in port terminals are likely to include a large of uncertainty, and could not find the location of assets because they can be easily damaged by malicious materials such as steel and water. This paper proposes an enhanced trajectory estimation method for the RTLS in port logistics environment. Basically, the RTLS for the port terminal estimates the location of mobile equipment which includes a large of packet loss and uncertainties. The proposed method corrects inaccurate location information and mitigates uncertainties occurred by the RTLS by adopting interpolation and the Kalman filter. In addition, this paper includes an instance of the RTLS for the port terminal and presents experimental results to prove the superiority of the proposed method.
