Parking space is usually very limited in major cities, especially Cairo, leading to traffic congestion, air pollution, and driver frustration. Existing car parking systems tend to tackle parking issues in a non-digitized manner. These systems require the drivers to search for an empty parking space with no guarantee of finding any wasting time, resources, and causing unnecessary congestion. To address these issues, this paper proposes a digitized parking system with a proof-of-concept implementation that combines multiple technological concepts into one solution with the advantages of using IoT for real-time tracking of parking availability. User authentication and automated payments are handled using a quick response (QR) code on entry and exit. Some experiments were done on real data collected for six different locations in Cairo via a live popular times library. Several machine learning models were investigated in order to estimate the occupancy rate of certain places. Moreover, a clear analysis of the differences in performance is illustrated with the final model deployed being XGboost. It has achieved the most efficient results with a R 2 score of 85.7%.

Current parking systems employ a single gateway-centered solution (i.e., cloud) for data processing which leads to the possibility of a single point of failure, data loss, and high delays. Moreover, the parking-spot selection process considers criteria that do not maximize parking utilization and revenue. The pricing strategy does not achieve high revenue because a fixed pricing rate is utilized. To address these issues, this paper proposes a smart parking system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) that provides useful information to drivers and parking administrators about available parking spots and related services such as parking navigation, reservation, and availability estimation. A multi-layer architecture is developed that consists of multiple sensor nodes, and fog and cloud computing layers. The acquired parking data are processed through fog computing nodes to facilitate obtaining the required real-time parking data. A novel algorithm to obtain the optimal parking spot with the minimum arrival time is also presented. Proof-of-concept implementation and simulation evaluations are conducted to validate the system performance. The findings show that the system reduces the parking arrival time by 16–46% compared to current parking systems. In addition, the revenue is increased for the parking authority by 10–15%.

Departemen Teknik Elektro Fakultas Teknik Universitas Hasanuddin memiliki tempat parkir kendaraan yang cukup memadai tetapi belum tertata dengan baik. Dimana sering didapati kendaraan terparkir tidak teratur antara mobil dan motor dosen, pegawai dan mahasiswa sehingga menyulitkan pengendara lain untuk keluar masuk dari lahan parkir. Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengimplementasikan sistem identifikasi pengguna kendaraan berbasis kartu RFID untuk membuat dosen, staf dan mahasiswa lebih teratur dalam parkir. Sistem ini dipasangkan pada lahan parkir Departemen Teknik Elektro yang terdiri dari sebuah barrier gate dengan lengan sepanjang 4 m, sebuah controller yang terhubung dengan internet, serta dua buah card reader sebagai akses untuk keluar masuk lahan parkir. Untuk dapat keluar/masuk lahan parkir pengguna kendaraan harus terlebih dahulu menempelkan kartu pada card reader yang ada di jalur keluar/masuk lahan parkir. Setelah sistem terpasang maka dilakukan demo dan sosialisasi kepada mahasiswa, dosen, dan staff Departemen Teknik Elektro. Dengan adanya sistem akses lahan parkir ini kondisi perparkiran semakin teratur dan tingkat keamanan menjadi lebih baik karena semua kendaraan yang memiliki akses keluar masuk sudah terdata dengan baik. Selain itu sistem akses lahan parkir yang dimplementasikan dapat mengurangi waktu untuk pengecekan identitas pengguna kendaraan sehingga menghindari terjadinya penumpukan kendaraan pada akses masuk dan keluar lahan parkir.
