Design and Fabrication of sub-THz Steerable Photonic Transmitter 1×4 Array for Short-Distance Wireless Links

Abstract: Here we present the latest results on the design, fabrication and test of stand-alone photonic devices devoted to ultra-high bandwidth wireless access networks operating near the Terahertz (THz) band, combined with the demonstration of a hybrid photonic packaging of a 1×4 antenna array matching the 1×4 InP UTC-PDs array butt-coupled to a SiN PIC phase control array.

“…The use of directional antennas can reduce the multipath richness (though significant multipath might occur even when using directional antennas at both link ends, particularly in outdoor environments). Furthermore, in the presence of non-negligible antenna side lobes, which are hard to avoid for electronically steerable antennas THz [25], [43], multipath richness is further enhanced; in the extreme case of omni-directional antennas, hundreds of multipath component (MPC) have been observed.…”

“…In order to obtain a realistic antenna pattern for THz communications, the patch antenna array from [37] is extended per simulation by INESC TEC to a realistic 16×16 patch antenna array with a gain of 26.2 dBi, a HPBW of approximately 6°and a side lobe level of 13.4 dB. The antenna diagram for a steering angle of 0°that is visualized in Fig.…”
