THz Measurements, Antennas, and Simulations: From the Past to the Future

Abstract: In recent years, terahertz (THz) systems have become an increasingly popular area of research thanks to their unique properties such as extremely high data rates towards Tb/s, submillimeter localization accuracy, high resolution remote sensing of materials, and remarkable advances in photonics and electronics technologies. This article traces the progress of THz measurements, antennas and simulations, from historical milestones to the current state of research and provides an outlook on the remaining challenge… Show more

“…Using a VNA-based frequency domain channel sounder operating between 145 to 146 GHz, authors in [21], [23] carried out channel measurements up to 100 m in urban environments on the University of Southern California-Los Angeles campus. They concluded that device-to-device communication is feasible at sub-THz frequencies in LOS and NLOS conditions [24]. Authors in [25] also employed a VNA-based channel sounder for measuring wireless links up to 65 m on the open floor of the Sello shopping mall in Espoo, Finland, for comparing the channels at 28 and 140 GHz, and found high correlation between spatio-temporal statistics describing the radio propagation behavior at the two frequencies.…”

“…For example, the 3GPP model defines the office environment as the entire office building comprising not only the office spaces themselves but also corridors, conference rooms, halls etc [1,9]. For the mmWave (28,38,71, and 82 GHz) measurements, actual omnidirectional antennas were used, whereas rotating horn antennas were used for the sub-THz (159 GHz) measurements. The sub-THz measurements were post-processed to derive omnidirectional characteristics.…”

“…Sporadic measurement and/or simulation at the sub-THz bands had been reported [15][16][17][18], besides rain and atmospheric attenuation [7,[19][20][21][22][23][24]. Lately, numerous measurement reports based on electromagnetic waves have been published, associated with IEEE 802.15.3d [25], 5G beyond and/or 6G (See [26][27][28][29] and references therein for a full survey). Among them, we list some relevant to indoor office measurements at the sub-THz band.…”

“…State-of-the-art investigations of THz communication systems include-among others-several channel measurements and modelling approaches [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][12][13][14], material characterisation [15], and surveys about challenges and opportunities [1,16,17]. Besides, device discovery for THz communication systems has been investigated for some time and different approaches were presented so far.…”
