Objective: To provide an overview of the state of research concerning smart technologies that support independent living in buildings, as well as a deeper literature review of the specific challenges for the building industry. Methods: A systematic mapping methodology was applied in this study to provide basis knowledge on the state of the art. The initial search on three databases gave 3485 articles. Of these, 610 articles were finally selected as relevant to the study after removing the duplicates and screening by applying inclusion and exclusion criteria based on titles and abstracts. Keywording was performed in order to answer the research questions of the study. Results: Results from the systematic mapping technology allow the detection of almost mature technologies, as well as promising technologies and research gaps. Results from the deeper literature review have identified challenges and new trends specific to the building industry. Conclusions: Efforts are still needed for the building industry in order to contribute significantly to meeting societal needs. Further research: Research fields that would benefit from further research are highlighted.

This survey aims to provide a comprehensive status of recent and current research on context-based Information Fusion (IF) systems, tracing back the roots of the original thinking behind the development of the concept of ''context''. It shows how its fortune in the distributed computing world eventually per-meated in the world of IF, discussing the current strategies and techniques, and hinting possible future trends. IF processes can represent context at different levels (structural and physical constraints of the scenario, a priori known operational rules between entities and environment, dynamic relationships modelled to interpret the system output, etc.). In addition to the survey, several novel context exploita-tion dynamics and architectural aspects peculiar to the fusion domain are presented and discussed.

The mainstream of research in Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is devoted to developing intelligent systems for processing the data collected through artificial sensing. Besides, there are other elements that must be considered to foster the adoption of AAL solutions in real environments. In this paper we focus on the problem of designing interfaces among caregivers and AAL systems. We present an alert management tool that supports carers in their task of validating alarms raised by the system. It generates text-based explanations—obtained through an argumentation process—of the causes leading to alarm activation along with graphical sensor information and 3D models, thus offering complementary types of information. Moreover, a guideline to use the tool when validating alerts is also provided. Finally, the functionality of the proposed tool is demonstrated through two real cases of alert.
