Design and development of agile product development cycle for rotary switches

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to conceptualise and develop various phases of agile product development cycle (PDC) for a manufacturing organization. Design/methodology/approach -The literature on agile manufacturing (AM) has been reviewed. Agile PDC has been conceptualised and the implementation study has been conducted in a rotary switches manufacturing organisation. The various phases of agile PDC have been performed and the inferences have been derived. Findings -The outcome of this research indicat… Show more

“…This research made no distinction between firms producing industrial or end-market products as the increasingly shortening product cycle and heightening competition in the electronics industry have made it clear that it is utterly impossible for any firm to remain passive if they want to succeed in the industry (Lau and Wang, 2009). To compete, all firms, regardless of the markets they serve, are required to produce a variety of products, in different volumes, within a short period of time (Vinodh et al, 2012). This agility can only be developed when the management leads with foresight and anticipates customer needs and aligns the relevant resources to meet such needs boldly and creatively ( Jacobs et al, 2011).…”

“…Further commenting that proposing an ideal design criterion for polymeric materials tends towards an assessment metric closer to perfection. Moreover, Vinodh et al (2012) conceptualised and developed various phases of the product development cycle, utilizing low-cost molding technology, to enable agility in contemporary manufacturing companies, e.g., small-and medium-sized startups. Finally, Kruth and Willems (2007) acknowledge that software support system for the design of injection molds is a powerful tool to create an initial design of a mold in a short time.…”

“…According to the aforementioned concepts, design strategy can be considered an approach to achieving the goal of product innovation in an enterprise. To achieve its performance goals, an enterprise must analyze customer needs and the influences of competitors and must efficiently apply its core R&D capability through its design team (Ali et al , 2013; Hsu, 2012; Vinodh et al , 2012). Taiwanese computer and consumer electronics products feature modern product forms, innovative functions and outstanding quality, and Taiwanese enterprises have introduced many widely recognized products and brands to the global market (Engida and Mohd, 2011).…”

“…This has motivated researchers to study how enterprises can enhance new product development by effectively integrating innovation (Haeussler et al , 2012; Huizingh, 2011; West and Bogers, 2014; Yang et al , 2012). Many scholars also claim that integrated product design procedures can enhance performance in new product development (Ali et al , 2013; Poetz and Schreier, 2012; Vinodh et al , 2012; Ulrich and Eppinger, 2012).…”
