Automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) is one of the major material handling systems, which is widely used in distribution centers and automated production environments. AS/RSs have been utilized not only as alternatives to traditional warehouses but also as a part of advanced manufacturing systems. AS/RSs can play an essential role in modern factories for work-in-process storage and offer the advantages of improved inventory control and cost-effective utilization of time, space and equipment. Many issues and approaches related to the efficiency improvement of AS/RSs have been addressed in the literature. This chapter presents an overview of this literature from the past 40 years. It presents a comprehensive description of the current state-of-the-art in AS/RSs and discusses future prospects. The focus is principally on travel time estimates and different control policies such as dwell-point of the stacker crane, storage assignment, request sequencing and so on. In particular, this chapter will provide researchers and decision makers with an understanding of how to apply existing approaches effectively. IntroductionThe chapter is presented in four sections. Comparing with traditional single-deep single-shuttle automated storage/retrieval systems, double-deep dual-shuttle AS/RS have the advantages of high space utilisation and more efficient, since less number of aisles and less empty travel of S/R machine. This warehousing systems have been developed for use in factories and distribution centres. In this paper, we first develop analytical models of quadruple command cycle to estimate the performance of such system, then taking the single shuttle and dual command cycle as the benchmark model, the potential improvement by dual shuttle has been analyzed, the results show that the efficiency of the system has a significant improvement using dual shuttle S/R machine. In addition, we have extended the proposed travel time to a special case that the double empty storage locations will take place and some management insights are given.

Abstract.One of the problems identified in waste collection integrated systems is the storage space. The design process of an automated system for the storage of collected waste includes finding solutions for the optimal exploitation of the limited storage space, seen that the equipment for the loading, identification, transport and transfer of the waste covers most of the available space inside the integrated collection system. In the present paper a three-dimensional model of an automated storage system designed by the authors for a business partner is presented. The storage system can be used for the following types of waste: plastic and glass recipients, aluminium cans, paper, cardboard and WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment). Special attention has been given to the transfer subsystem, specific for the storage system, which should be able to transfer different types and shapes of waste. The described virtual model of the automated system for the storage of collected waste will be part of the virtual model of the entire integrated waste collection system as requested by the beneficiary.
