Design and Construction of Foundations for Industrial Facilities in the Areas of Former Post-Mining Waste Dumps

Abstract: This article presents the characteristics of the heaps resulting from coal exploitation in terms of the possibility of their development for industrial facilities. The chances of soil improvement and the existing threats were indicated, emphasising the risk of self-ignition. The most effective technologies are dynamic or impulse compaction, which allows deep soil improvement and the obtaining of an appropriately rigid and load-bearing subsoil. The homogeneity of the soil’s mechanical properties that form the s… Show more

“…The mining material is characterized primarily by rocks and rock material (clay stones, mudstones, sandstones, etc.). There are also large amounts of silica (SiO 2 ) in it, alumina (Al 2 O 3 ), iron oxides (Fe x O y ), potassium oxide (K 2 O), carbon (C) and calcium oxide (CaO), sodium oxide (Na 2 O), or titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) [37,38]. The mineralogical composition of the tailings sample from the thermally active Heřmanice spoil heap is presented in Table 3.…”

“…Despite the decrease in the use of coal for energy production in the last years, the global share of the total energy supplied by this source in 2019 was 26.8%, with 162.4 EJ [5]. During this year, Russia's coal production was 430 Mt, making it the sixth largest producer in the world [6,7]. The influence of coal in this country is also demonstrated by the presence of many companies dedicated to this fuel.…”

“…Currently, the accumulated gangue exceeds six billion tons in China, and the annual increase is about 500~800 million tons [ 12 ]. The incorporation of solid waste into underground backfill provides an efficient strategy for the waste utilization and disposal [ 12 , 13 , 14 ], which minimizes problems caused by its exposure to the environment [ 11 , 15 ]. Grouting backfill materials (GBMs) based on coal gangue (CG) are highly desirable in coal mining in terms of their accessibility to abundant CG and the urgent demand for utilization and disposal of existing and continuously generated CG [ 11 ].…”
