Design and Analysis of Several Kinds of Dielectric Lens Antennas

Abstract: This paper focuses on the design and analysis of several kinds of dielectric lens antennas and their application at millimeter waves and sub-millimeter waves. The lenses analyzed include refractive lens and diffractive lens such as hyperbolic lens antenna, binary diffractive lens antenna and shaped lens antenna. Our purpose is to optimize the performance of the lens antenna so as it has low side lob level, insertion loss and thin thickness. Finite element method (FEM) based on the weak form of Helmholtz equati… Show more

“…Typically these large apertures are realized via a single or a double reflector antenna. Other possibilities, which have been less exploited up to now technologically, are the phased array antennas [4,5] and the lens antennas [6,7] and in particular the discrete lens antenna (DLA) [8][9][10][11].…”

“…Therefore, the rigorous electromagnetic analysis method is necessary to analyze them accurately and credibly. We have already analyzed lots of lenses rigorously [15][16][17][18][19]. In this paper, we will analyze only FCLs when illuminated by a plane wave at millimeter wavelengths, owing to their unfamiliarities and novelties.…”

“…Of course, other types of axicons can also be analyzed by the same way. However, the analysis method adopted in this paper is different from those presented in [15][16][17][18][19], that is, a two-dimension finite-difference time-domain (2-D FDTD) method in conjunction with Stratton-Chu formulas. The analysis results and conclusions are given in the end.…”

“…Lens can be used to transform Gaussian beam or used as antennas in higher frequency bands [14,15]. Scattering of Gaussian beam is also interested [16,17].…”
