Properties of Approximate Bessel Beams at Millimeter Wavelengths Generated by Fractal Conical Lens

Abstract: Abstract-An axicon, which images a point source into a line along the optic axis, is used widely to generate an approximation to a Bessel beam. More recently many novel axicons, such as Fresnel axicons, Fractal axicons and fractal conical lenses (FCLs), have been proposed. Understanding the properties of Bessel beams generated by these axicons is very helpful to research their applications. However, in optical region, all of them are calculated approximately by the scalar theory. To accurately analyze FCLs whe… Show more

“…More recently, Bessel beams at mm-and sub mm-bands have been produced by us using binary optical elements (BOE's) [6][7][8][9]. Therefore, it is necessary and significant that the comparison of propagation of apertured Bessel and Gaussian beams is done at millimeter wavelengths, because this is helpful to determine which beam should be selected to transmit powers or signals.…”

“…It is known that an axicon converts an incident plane wave into an approximation to Bessel beam [11][12][13][14], located within the interference zone ECFD, as depicted in Fig. 1(a).…”

“…For instance, the Bessel beams form a orthogonal and complete set in the circular frame [5], the Mathieu beams form such a set in the elliptic frame [6], and the parabolic beams, in the parabolic frame [7]. Undoubtedly, the more famous family of NDBs are the Bessel beams due to their wide range of applications [8][9][10]. Zeroth-order mode [11] and higher-order modes of Bessel-like beams were experimentally generated [12] and their propagation properties were studied in free space [2,3] and in other nonconventional media, for instance, in the so-called q-plates [13].…”
