Design and analysis of a large-scale multicast output buffered ATM switch

Abstract: Abstmct-We propose and analyze a recursive modular arcbitecture for implementing a large-scale multiwt output buffered ATM switch (MOBAS). A multicast bmkout principle!, an extension of the generdhd knockout prieiple, is applifd in constructing the MOBAS in order to reduce the hardware complexity (e.g., the number of switch elements and intetconnedon wires) by almost one order of magnitude. In our proposed switch architecture, four major functions of designing a multicast switch: cell replication, cell routing… Show more

“…This kind of design will inherit most of the attractive features of the MIN design. Typical switch examples include the MOBAS switch [9], the Abacus switch [4], [5], and the PINIUM switch [3]. The problems encountered by the cascade approach no longer exist in the integrated approach.…”

“…As switch sizes become larger and link speeds grow higher, it is not practical to build the output queue for such a switch using the current memory storage technologies. 2) Abacus Switch: The Abacus [4], [5] switch is modified from the purely output-buffered MOBAS switch [9]. Input buffers are equipped to temporarily store cells that have lost contention inside the multicast grouping network (MGN).…”

“…The general structure of a space-based space division multicast switch is that of a copy network followed by a routing stage. Various buffer placement and addressing table management policies defined on this general structure differentiate various multicast packet switch proposals [4], [5], [20]. Our interest in this paper is in modeling and analysis of space-based copy networks for copy scheduling algorithms that are simple and easy to implement in hardware.…”

“…For example, Chao et al proposed two of the most recent multicasting switches -Multicast output buffered ATM switch (MOBAS) and Abacus switch [2,3]. In both cases, fairly complicated architectures and components are involved to accommodate the functionality of multicasting.…”

“…It is inevitable that the volume of multicast traffic will continue to grow. There are many work done to make high speed network switches be able to handle multicast [9,11,20,14,2,23]. For each multicasting cell, the set of its destination output ports is called f anout.…”
