-The objective of this work was to study the morphologic development and the swimming and feeding behaviors of piracanjuba larvae, Brycon orbignyanus Valenciennes (1849) (Characiformes, Characidae, Bryconinae), during the period from zero to 172 hours after hatching (standard length = 3.62 -11.94 mm). The morphological analyses were accomplished by using a trinocular stereo microscope, while the behavioral analyses were performed through periodic observations. In 28 hours after hatching, the larvae (standard length = 6.25 ± 0.13 mm) showed the following structural and behavioral characteristics that made them become active predators able to overcome a larval critical phase, the beginning of exogenous feeding: presence of pigmented eyes, terminal and wide mouth, developed oral dentition, developing digestive tube, yolk sac reduction, fins and swim bladder formation, horizontal swimming, cannibalism, and predation.Intense cannibalism among larvae was verified from 26 to 72 hours. At the end of the metamorphosis -172 hours after hatching -the larvae measuring 11.94 + 0.80 mm in standard length presented a flexed notochord, caudal fin bifurcation, dorsal and anal fin formation, synchronized movements, and formation of shoals, characteristics that together allow enhanced perception and locomotio in exploration of the environment, determining the best moment for transfering to the fishponds. New studies can contribute to commercial fish farming by improving feeding management, performance, survival, and productivity of this species.Key Words: behavior, Brycon orbignyanus, Characiformes, first feeding, morphology, ontogenyDesenvolvimento morfológico e comportamental de larvas de piracanjuba RESUMO -Objetivou-se estudar o desenvolvimento morfológico e os comportamentos natatório e alimentar de larvas de piracanjuba, Brycon orbignyanus Valenciennes (1849) (Characiformes, Characidae, Bryconinae) no período de 0 a 172 horas após a eclosão (comprimento-padrão = 3,62 -11,94 mm). As análises morfológicas foram realizadas com auxílio de um microscópio estereoscópico trinocular e as comportamentais, por meio de observações periódicas. Com 28 horas após a eclosão, as larvas (6,25 ± 0,13 mm) apresentaram características estruturais e comportamentais que as tornavam predadoras ativas, capazes de superar a etapa crítica da fase larval, o início da alimentação exógena: presença de olhos pigmentados, boca terminal e ampla, dentes desenvolvidos, tubo digestivo em desenvolvimento, saco vitelino em redução, nadadeiras e bexiga gasosa em formação, nado horizontal, canibalismo e predação. Canibalismo intenso entre as larvas foi verificado das 26 às 72 horas. Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes cores de aquários na larvicultura da piabanha-do-pardo (Brycon sp.). Os tratamentos consistiram na utilização de aquários de cores claras (branca, verde e azul) e escuras (marrom e preta). Ao final do experimento, foram mensurados a sobrevivência, o peso, o comprimento total e a coloração das larvas, que foram comparados pelo teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. A sobrevivência foi menor (66,25%), com maior taxa de canibalismo (17,08%), no aquário de cor azul, quando comparado ao aquário de cor marrom (84,17%), com baixa taxa de canibalismo (6,25%). O comprimento total, o peso e a mortalidade não diferiram entre os tratamentos. A coloração das larvas escureceu progressivamente dos aquários mais claros para os mais escuros, o que interferiu no canibalismo e na sobrevivência. O aquário marrom promove maior valor de sobrevivência e menor taxa de canibalismo nas larvas de piabanha-do-pardo.Termos para indexação: Brycon, canibalismo, coloração, mortalidade, pigmentação. Larviculture of piabanha-do-pardo in aquariums of different colorsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different colors of aquariums on the larviculture of piabanha-do-pardo (Brycon sp.). The treatments consisted of the use of light-(white, green, and blue) and dark-(brown and black) colored aquariums. At the end of the experiment, survival, weight, total length, and color of the larvae were measured and compared by the Tukey test, at 5% probability. Survival was lower (66.25%), with a higher rate of cannibalism (17.08%), in the blue-colored aquarium when compared to the brown-colored one (84.17%), with a low rate of cannibalism (6.25%). Total length, weight, and mortality did not differ among treatments. The color of the larvae gradually darkened from the lighter to the darker aquariums, which interfered with cannibalism and survival. The brown aquarium promotes a greater survival value and a lower rate of cannibalism in larvae of piabanha-do-pardo.

Importance of a turbulent river section below a giant waterfall for fish spawning: Indications from drift and dispersion patterns of early life stages

Seasonal drift patterns of fish eggs and larvae were analysed along the river section downstream the Iguaçu River Falls to the confluence with Paraná River, over three spawning seasons. This river section is situated in a narrow rocky canyon characterized by a steep slope, which leads to highly turbulent and fast flowing conditions in a series of rapids. Water transit time in this river stretch of 20 km was short (5–11 h), the flow‐velocity in rapids can reach values of more than 6 m s−1. Densities of drifting eggs and larvae varied between three spawning seasons, and differences of eggs were more pronounced compared to larvae. Eggs and larvae were observed all along the river section. A spatial, longitudinal distribution pattern of larvae was found, with higher numbers in the upper section. A distinct spatial sequence of different embryonic stages was observed, with the highest abundance of early stages. Larval densities were low in comparison to egg densities, and preflexion and flexion stages predominated. High abundance of buoyant eggs in drift indicates fish spawning in rapid and turbulent waters of the Iguaçu River, particularly downstream from the Iguaçu Falls. Rainfall and turbidity may be the main trigger for spawning. Spawned eggs drifted quickly towards the confluence, most are likely to hatch in the Paraná River, while larvae disperse to nursery habitats even in the river section below the falls. Thus, inshore zones along the whole stretch provide nursery habitats for larval development of fish species exhibiting different reproductive strategies.
