This study aimed to assess the effect of stocking density of 10, 12, 14, and 16 birds m −2 on performance, carcass and cut yields, productivity, and bone development of broiler chickens Cobb 500 ® . The experimental design was completely randomized design with four treatments (stocking densities) and four replications. The assessments were performed weekly at 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days. The best live weight result was found at a density of 10 birds m −2 in the period from 1 to 7 days. No effect of density was observed on feed intake and weight gain. From 1 to 14 days, the best live weights were found at densities of 10, 12, and 14 birds m . In the period from 1 to 21 days, live weight and weight gain were higher at densities of 10, 12, and 14 birds m . A difference (P < 0.05) was observed for live weight, weight gain, and feed intake of animals reared at densities of 10, 12, and 14 birds m −2 for the phases from 1 to 35 days and the total phase from 1 to 42 days of bird age when compared to 16 birds m −2 , which presented lower performance. However, feed conversion of 1-7, 1-14, 1-21, 1-35, and 1-42 days and carcass and cut characteristics showed no significant differences for all treatments. On the other hand, productivity was higher in the treatments with 14 and 16 birds m −2 , but without difference between each other. No interaction (P>0.05) was observed between stocking density and age for the assessed bone parameters. Similarly, no difference (P>0.05) was observed for bone development of broiler chickens reared at different stocking densities for the studied parameters. Thus, the increased density of 10 or 12 birds m −2 to 14 birds m −2 has no influence on zootechnical performance, carcass and cut yields, and bone development, but increases broiler chicken productivity reared in a conventional shed without air conditioning.

RESUMO -Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar quatro densidades de estocagem na recria de rã-touro em mini-baias. As densidades estudadas foram: D1: 75 rãs/m² (inicial) e 35 rãs/m² (final); D2: 105 rãs/m² (inicial) e 50 rãs/m² (final); D3: 125 rãs/m² (inicial) e 60 rãs/m² (final); e D4: 160 rãs/m² (inicial) e 75 rãs/m² (final). No ensaio de desempenho, foram utilizadas 558 rãs com peso médio de 26,80 g durante 56 dias, distribuídas em um delineamento em blocos casualizados, com seis repetições. Houve efeito das densidades sobre o ganho de peso, que foram inversamente proporcionais. Menores densidades resultaram em maior consumo de alimento, de modo que, com o uso das densidades iniciais de 75 e 105 rãs/m², obteve-se maior consumo de alimento que o uso de 125 e 160 rãs/m². A conversão alimentar aparente também variou; a densidade inicial de 160 rãs/m² proporcionou a pior média desse parâmetro. Os tratamentos foram avaliados economicamente, segundo os custos com alimentação, a receita bruta e a receita líquida parcial proporcionados. Inversely proportional effects of densities on weight gain were observed. Smaller densities resulted in greater values of feed intake, and the initial densities of 75 and 105 bullfrogs/m² resulted in higher values of feed intake than 125 and 160 bullfrogs/m². The apparent feed conversion also varied , showing the worst average on initial density of 160 bullfrogs/m². Economic analysis was performed with the costs with feeding, gross income and partial net income. It was concluded that the final density of 50 bullfrogs/m² increased the partial net income and was indicated for production of bullfrogs.

Oliveira and Almeida (2002) did not detect any effect over productive performance studying densities between 11.7 and 16.7 rabbits/m 2 (600 cm 2 /rabbit or higher), and the production increased when density changed from 26.9 to 38.1 kg/m 2 . Neither Prawirodigdo et al (1985) nor Camacho et al (2003), observed differences in the studied interval (8.6 -14.5 and 12.2-19.6 kits/m 2 , respectively), for what they recommend the highest densities, because that imply less equipment, housing surface and investment joined to an increase of meat production.…”

The aim of this work was to evaluate different management strategies to optimize rabbit production under chronic heat stress. To achieve it, three trials were conducted. In the first trial, to find the optimal cage density in tropical very dry forest condition, were measured growth performance, mortality rate, injured animals and carcass performance over an initial population of 300 cross-breed rabbits of New Zealand, California, Butterfly, Dutch and Satin, weaned at 30 days (535 ± 8 g, standard error). Treatments evaluated were: 6, 12, 18 and 24 rabbits/m 2 (3, 6, 9 and 12 rabbits/cage, respectively, each cage of 0.5 m 2 ). The maximal temperature-humidity index indicated a severe heat stress from weaning to 2.2 kg body weight (experimental time). At the end of experimental period 10, 20, 30 and 30 rabbits from the treatments of 6, 12, 18 and 24 rabbits/m 2 , respectively, were slaughtered and carcass performance recorded.Average daily gain and feed intake decreased by 0.31 ± 0.070 and 1.20 ± 0.25 g, respectively, per each unit that the density increased at the beginning of the experiment (P = 0.001). It increased the length of the fattening period by 0.91 ± 0.16 d (P = 0.001) per each unit of increment of density. However, rabbit production (kg/m 2 ) increased linear and quadratically with the density (P < 0.008). Animals housed at the highest density compared to the lower one tended to show a higher incidence of ringworm (68.9 vs 39.4%; P = 0.075), injured animals (16.8 vs 3.03%; P = 0.12) and mortality (20.5 vs 9.63%; P = 0.043).The proportion of scapular fat (P = 0.042) increased linearly with increasing levels of density. Increasing density reduced linearly dorsal length (P = 0.001), and reduced linear and quadratically drip loss percentage (P = 0.097 and 0.018, respectively). In the second trial, 46 nulliparous rabbit does (23 clipped and 23 unclipped) with a BW of 3.67 ± 0.05 kg (s.e.) were used to evaluate heat stress and circadian rhythms comparing unclipped and clipped rabbit does, and to study if a more extensive breeding system increase litters performance at weaning without impairing rabbit doe performance,.
