Descriptive analysis of retirement of Thoroughbred racehorses due to tendon injuries at the Hong Kong Jockey Club (1992–2004)

Abstract: This descriptive study has provided a useful resource for further case-control studies to investigate risk factors for retirement from racing due to tendon injury. This is the first step toward the development of management tools to reduce the incidence of tendon injury related retirement in Hong Kong.

“…Training and competing are both responsible of these injuries (Ely et al 2004;Murray et al 2006;Pinchbeck et al 2004). They often require long periods without full training and they represent one of the major reasons of horse athletes retirement (Lam et al 2007). Ultrasonography is a widely spread technique for tendon lesions diagnosis, follow-up and a tool to establish a prognosis (Denoix et al 1990;Genovese et al 1986).…”

“…The most common strain-induced injuries in horses are believed to be preceded by a phase of degeneration (Smith and Goodship 2004). Therefore prevalence of tendonitis increases with age, as shown by Kasashima et al (2004), Perkins et al (2005), Lam et al (2007).…”

“…Injury of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) in racing Thoroughbreds is the most frequent musculoskeletal problem causing early retirement in the racing industry (Lam et al 2007). Once seriously injured, the tendon never returns to the original quality, elasticity and functional ability.…”
