“…The pks gene had the highest downregulation, followed by nrps , laeA , veA , and velB . The pks and nrps genes are included in the OTA-putative gene cluster [ 25 , 47 , 48 ], while, velA , laeA , and velB are known as transcription factors regulating the secondary metabolism [ 27 , 49 ]. The downregulation of pks and nrps was significant higher than other three genes.…”

“…Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin that is a common contaminant of a wide variety of food products. The molecular structure comprises a chlorinated polyketide dihydroisocoumarin ring linked to phenylalanine and, as shown in different producing fungal species, a polyketide synthase (PKS) is a major part of the biosynthetic pathway (Wang et al 2016 ; Massi et al 2016 ; Gallo et al 2017 ; Gill-Serna et al 2018 ). OTA inhibits protein synthesis and energy production, induces oxidative stress, cell apoptosis and necrosis, and DNA adduct formation, and is mostly recognized as a nephrotoxin (Heussner and Bingle 2015 ; Közégi and Poór 2016 ).…”

“…For example, the potential for agricultural workers exposed to high levels of pesticides to be screened based on genotype would be a way to help target protective measures for high risk groups and reduce disease burden (Tawfik Khattab et al, 2016). A better understanding of the regulation of biosynthetic genes related to some mycotoxins may also lead to new ways to monitor the food chain for mycotoxin contamination (Gil-Serna et al, 2018). The genetic diversity in Africa, combined with unique exposures and co-morbidities, can lead to novel G x E findings that cannot be discovered elsewhere.…”

“…Aflatoxin and other mycotoxins have been linked to possible neurotoxicological outcomes as well as chronic hepatomegaly (Gong et al, 2012). Ochratoxin A, a mycotoxin produced by several Aspergillus and Penicillium species, is associated with chronic interstitial nephropathy (Hmaissia Khlifa et al, 2012;Gil-Serna et al, 2018). Contaminated peanuts have been associated recently with growth faltering (Mupunga et al, 2017).…”
