Dermoscopy of early stage mycosis fungoides

Abstract: These observations provide a first indication that early stage MF exhibits a characteristic dermoscopic pattern which is different from CD. Prospective studies with long term follow-up are needed to determine the value of these dermoscopic criteria in the differentiation between the two entities in the daily routine.

“…However, although their presence is considered ‘prerequisite' for the diagnosis of PP, dotted vessels do not represent a specific dermoscopic feature, since they can be seen in several other inflammatory skin diseases, including dermatitis and pityriasis rosea [8,10,11]. Accordingly, the dermoscopic differentiation between the latter entities and PP is not based on vessel morphology, but on the evaluation of additional criteria, namely the arrangement of vessels and the color and distribution of scales [8].…”

“…Several inflammatory skin diseases have been shown to exhibit characteristic and repetitive dermoscopic patterns. [3][4][5] A recent study 3 investigated the diagnostic accuracy of certain dermoscopic criteria of psoriasis, providing evidence that the method may significantly enhance the clinical differentiation from dermatitis, pityriasis rosea and lichen planus. The dermoscopic pattern of psoriatic plaques of the patient presented herein is in agreement to the findings of the latter study.…”

“…Our case also indicate that PCFCCL exhibits a characteristic dermoscopic pattern consisting of fine short linear vessels and, vascular structures resembling spermatozoa which was described in early stage of mycosis fungoides and never in PCFCCL [5]. However, prospective studies with long term follow-up are needed to determine the value of these dermoscopic criteria .…”
