Dermatoglyphics in Leukemia

Abstract: ExtractThe study of dermatoglyphic features of 76 Caucasian patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia revealed that male patients had higher frequency of digital whorls (33%) than their brothers (26.7%) or fathers (27.8%). Patients with leukemia and their sibs had more Sydney palmar flexion creases (41.3% and 35.4%) than their parents (10.9%) or two control groups (20.4% and 10.5%). SpeculationThe association of acute lymphocytic leukemia to increased frequency of digital whorl patterns and Sydney palmar flexio… Show more

“…Colombo et al (1973) found whorls to be decreased and ulnar loops to be increased in females, whereas Purvis- found a higher frequency of whorls in patients of both sexes. However, in the Wertelecki et al (1973) series, the fathers and the brothers both had a lower frequency of whorls than the male patients. “…An increase of Sydney lines without an increase of single transverse creases was observed in several investigated groups of patients (Wertelecki et al, 1969(Wertelecki et al, , 1973Colombo et al, 1973). “…The Sydney line is a proximal transverse crease that extends from beyond the hypothenar eminence to the uinar margin of the palm. Wertelecki et al (1973;1979) used somewhat stricter criteria and labelled an elongated transverse palmar flexion crease as a Sydney Une only if it reached the ulnar margin of the palm. If the line failed to reach the ulnar margin even by only a few millimetres, they referred to the configuration as an aberrant Sydney line.…”
