Depression in Autoimmune Diseases

Abstract: Up to 50% of patients with autoimmune diseases show an impairment of health-related quality of life and exhibit depression-like symptoms. The immune system not only leads to inflammation in affected organs, but also mediates behavior abnormalities including fatigue and depression-like symptoms. This review focuses on the different pathways involved in the communication of the immune system with the neuronal network and the body's timing system. The latter is built up by a hierarchically organized expression of… Show more

“…The findings that IP TNF induces sickness and reduces saccharin drinking add to the evidence that these two states co-occur. Previously, we have proposed that under these conditions reduced reward drinking is more parsimoniously referred to as extended sickness (Cathomas et al, 2015b;Pryce and Fontana, 2016). This is because immune-inflammatory challenges produce a different constellation of behavioral changes e.g.…”

“…The other studies reported similar frequency of fatigue in systemic autoimmune diseases that ranged from 70% in Sjögren's syndrome to 80% in systemic sclerosis and RA. The cause of fatigue in SAD is still unclear and some studies explain it by peripheral immune activation and systemic inflammation either directly or indirectly by mitochondrial damage induction [9,10]. Similarly, to some other studies, the lung function test abnormalities were found predominantly in patients with CVD [11].…”
