Aim: The study aim was to establish the differences in the levels of anxiety, depression, and quality of life in patients with acne and atopic dermatitis, to examine differences related to gender, and to examine the relationship of levels of anxiety, depression, and quality of life to age and personality traits. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) were used for data collection, and the Mini International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) was used for identification of five personality factors. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between patients with acne and patients with atopic dermatitis regarding levels of anxiety, depression, and quality of life. In terms of age, a difference was found only in the incidence of anxiety in the group of patients with acne; higher anxiety was found in women. There were no statistically significant differences in anxiety, depression, and quality of life related to age in patients with acne and atopic dermatitis. Significant relationships of the variables to personality traits were found in both groups. Conclusion: Knowing the factors influencing the incidence of mental health problems in patients with acne and atopic dermatitis helps in early nursing diagnosis of such problems, which can eliminate the negative impact of mental health problems on patients' quality of life.

Background and Design:In this study, we evaluated anxiety and depression levels, levels of problem solving, focus of control, tendency to anger and quality of life in patients with acne as well as the association between those parameters and the clinical features of acne. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two patients with mild to severe acne vulgaris and 46 healthy controls were enrolled. Acne severity was graded in all patients by a dermatologist. The Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Problem Solving Inventory (PSI), The State-Trait Anger Scale (STAS), Rotter's Internal-External Focus of Control Scale (RIELCS) and the Short Form 36-Item Health Survey (SF-36) were applied to all participants. Results: In our study, we found out that anxiety and depression scores were significantly higher in patients with acne vulgaris than in controls. In BSI, anxiety disorders, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, and paranoid thoughts scores were significantly higher in patients with acne than in controls. According to SF-36, physical role difficulty, general health and mental health scores were significantly lower in patients with acne. Conclusion:The results of our study support the previous findings suggesting that acne vulgaris leads to various psychiatric problems, such as depression and anxiety and, adversely affects quality of life of patients. A pikkelysömör kialakulásában és progressziójában a betegek és az orvosok jelentős hányada a stresszt tartja az egyik legfontosabb rizikótényezőnek. Mivel a stresszor és hatásai is egyaránt szubjektumfüggőek és így nehezen mérhe-tőek, sokáig csupán kevés, a stressznek a betegség kialakulásában játszott szerepét vizsgáló tanulmány készült. Az elmúlt években azonban egyre több nívós, objektív mérésekkel alátámasztott vizsgálat született, amelyek új, érté-kes adatokkal szolgáltak a háttérben zajló patofi ziológiai folyamatok megértéséhez. A szerzők a szakirodalomban fellelhető stresszexpozíciót és -percepciót befolyásoló pszichológiai (alexithymia, személyiség, hangulat) és a stresszválaszt szabályozó biológiai (kortizol-, adrenalinszintek, neurogén gyulladás) tényezőket elemző vizsgálatokat integratív, pszichoszomatikus szemlélettel tekintik át, és bemutatják, hogy az eddig főleg csak tapasztalati szinten bizonyí-tott kapcsolatot egyre több modern, magas színvonalú kutatási eredmény igazolja. Ismerve a stresszcsökkentő pszichofarmakológiai és pszichoterápiás intervenciók sikerességét a pikkelysömör kezelésében és a betegek életminő-ségének javításában, a szerzők bíznak abban, hogy tanulmányuk hozzájárul a pszichoszomatikus szemlélet szélesebb körű elterjedéséhez a mindennapi bőrgyógyászati gyakorlatban. As both stressor and its effects are subject-dependent, thus extremely diffi cult to measure, our understanding of the exact role of stress in disease development was limited for a long time. In the past decade several new studies were carried out which expanded our knowledge on the pathophysiologic processes linking stress to psoriasis via with their objective measurements and the applied new techniques. The authors review the current literature of both psychological (alexithymia, personality, affect) and biological (cortisol, epinephrine, neurogenic infl ammation) factors infl uencing stress perception and response in psoriasis. Results of recent investigations support previous reports about the interaction between stress and psoriasis with objective evidence. Knowing how effective stress-reducing psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions are in the treatment of psoriasis the authors hope that this review contributes to a wider acceptance of the psychosomatic attitude in everyday dermatologic practice.
