Depression and anxiety in palliative care inpatients compared with those receiving palliative care at home

Abstract: The results suggest that home-based palliative care patients and palliative care inpatients should receive equal psychological support, and that clinicians need to be aware of the psychological vulnerability of younger and less-functional patients. The prevalence of depression and anxiety indicates that all palliative care patients should be screened for psychological distress, to identify those who need further assessment and treatment.

PS is often recognized as a functional capacity index that is not only related to patients’ age and disease stage, but also with the concurrence of symptoms.…”

“…However, several studies show increased risk of mental disorders among older people (Buigues et al, ; Drageset, Eide, & Ranhoff, ; Landi et al, ; Mystakidou et al, ). For example, many studies showed that higher age is associated with lower anxiety levels (Austin, Wiley, McEvoy, & Archer, ; Linden et al, ; Wochna Loerzel, ). Other studies showed that higher age is a risk factor for depression (Cardoso et al, ; Fujisawa et al, ).…”

Por outro lado, é de 15% a prevalência de sintomas depressivos em idosos não hospitalizados 6 .…”
