BackgroundChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious disease frequently accompanied by anxiety and depression. Few studies have focused on anxiety and depression for mild COPD patients in China. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors for anxiety and depression among patients with mild COPD in urban communities.MethodsA cross-sectional survey of 275 mild COPD patients was conducted in 6 communities randomly sampled from Pudong New Area of Shanghai, China, in 2016. Data on socioeconomic factors and health conditions were acquired through a face-to-face interview as well as a physical examination. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and EQ-5D visual analogue (EQ-5Dvas) were applied to evaluate their mental health and quality of life, respectively. Logistic regression model was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and their 95% confidential intervals (CI) for risk factors associated with anxiety or depression.ResultsAmong 275 subjects, 8.1% had anxiety and 13.4% had depression. Logistic regression analysis indicated that female patients were more likely to suffer from anxiety than male patients (aOR = 6.41, 95% CI:1.73-23.80). Poor health status (EQ-5Dvas score < 70) was significantly associated with increased risks of anxiety (aOR = 5.99, 95% CI: 2.13-16.82) and depression (aOR = 2.67, 95% CI: 1.29-5.52).ConclusionsThere were increased risks of anxiety and depression in mild COPD patients living in urban communities. Female sex and poor health status were significantly correlated to anxiety or depression. Association of stress and anxiety with self-care in hemodialysis patients

Introduction: It is generally accepted that stress and anxiety are of the most common psychiatric complications of hemodialysis. Self-care is considered as one of the health promotion behaviors. Self-care reduction increases the risk of mortality and morbidity too. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between stress and anxiety with self-care in hemodialysis patients. Patients and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 80 hemodialysis patients, selected by convenience sampling method. The perceived stress was measured by a perceived stress scale (PSS) questionnaire, since the anxiety assessed by the Spielberger StateTrait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), accordingly, self-care assessed by hemodialysis patients’ selfcare measurement scale. Results: In this study, no patient had poor self-care. The self-care was moderate in 75% of patients and good in 25% of patients. The anxiety was mild in 46.2% of patients, moderate in 50% and severe in 3.8%. The perceived stress was low in 62.5% of patients and high in 37.5% of patients. There was a significant negative correlation between the perceived stress score and the self-care score (P=0.001, r=-0.376), however, no correlation was observed between anxiety and self-care score (P=0.089, r=-0.193). Conclusion: The results showed that stress of hemodialysis patients had a negative effect on their self-care, while anxiety had no significant effect on self-care. Therefore, it is suggested to identify and resolve the factors affecting stress of these patients, and to conduct further research regarding this subject.

Background Patients undergoing hemodialysis are prone to psychiatric symptoms due to considerable changes in their individual, social and occupational life which can influence the course and prognosis of renal diseases. Objective The aim of the present study is to evaluate the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis in Qazvin, Iran. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 120 patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis in Qazvin, Iran. Prior to study, their demographic and laboratory data were recorded. Dialysis adequacy was assessed using urea reduction ratio (URR) and KT/V formula. Data collection tools were Beck's Depression Inventory, Beck's Anxiety Inventory and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation. Collected data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test and t-test. Findings The mean level of depression in patients was 13.72 where 79 (65.8%) had depressive symptoms. The severity of symptoms was mild in 47 (39.2%), moderate in 21 (17.5%), and severe in 11 (9.2%). Moreover, the mean level of anxiety was 9.73 where 16 (13.3%) had anxiety symptoms. Of 120 patients, only 8 (6.7%) had suicidal ideation. There was a significant negative association between dialysis adequacy and the severity of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Anxiety symptoms were more frequent among unemployed patients, and the increase in age was associated with the increase in suicidal ideations (P<0.05). Conclusion Regarding the high prevalence of depressive symptoms and existence of anxiety symptoms in patients undergoing hemodialysis in Qazvin, assessment of these psychiatric disorders along with effective therapeutic interventions should be considered.
