Burial and exhumation of the western border of the Ukrainian Shield (Podolia): a multi‐disciplinary approach

The Podolia region is located along the western border of the Eastern European Craton, which is also known as Ukrainian Shield. From the Ordovician to the Miocene, this area formed part of an epicontinental basin system. In order to investigate the effects of orogenic cycles occurring along the plate margin, a multi-disciplinary approach was used in this study. Paleotemperature analysis and lowtemperature thermochronometry were combined with stratigraphic data to obtain a burial model for the Paleozoic succession exposed in the study area. Maximum burial for Silurian and Devonian rocks occurred during the Devonian and Early Carboniferous at depths of 4-5 km, as constrained by vitrinite reflectance and illite content in mixed illite-smectite layers. Thermochronometric data indicate that exhumation through the 45-120°C temperature range took place between the Late Triassic and the Early Jurassic, and that no significant burial occurred afterwards (temperatures characterising the stratigraphically lowermost units remaining below ca. 60°C). These results point to a major exhumation event coeval with the Cimmerian orogenesis, which took place a few hundreds of kilometres away from the study area. On the other hand, no significant effect of the Alpine orogenesis was recorded, although the collisional front was located <100 km from the Podolia region. This work shows how paleothermal and thermochronometric analyses can be successfully integrated with stratigraphic data to reconstruct the burial history, and how the burial history of a basin located on a plate margin can, in some cases, be independent from the distance of the margin from the collisional fronts.

Taking into consideration well logging of the Silurian deposits of the Volyn-Podillya plate, the materials of laboratory investigations of petrophysical parameters of reservoir rocks were analyzed and systematized. Studied were capacity-filtration properties of reservoir rocks as well as their lithological-petrographical and structural-textural features. An analysis of the distribution of petrophysical parameters of the Silurian deposits of the Volyn-Podillya plate was executed by the methods of mathematic statistics. Main statistics and correlation coefficients between individual parameters were calculated, histograms of the distribution of the porosity factor Kpor and the permeability factor Kper, volumetric weight δ and carbonation C in rocks were compiled, regression equations between parameters and their alteration with depth were formed. Petrophysical parameters of the samples available for carbonate and terrigenous rocks of Silurian were analyzed separately. Executed investigations of petrophysical properties of rocks testify that in the Silurian deposits the carbonate reservoirs with the complex structure of the porous space were distributed. A visible alteration of capacity-filtration parameters of rocks of Silurian deposits is observed with depth. Porosity of rocks decreases with depth, but permeability increases that is a confirmation of the formation of the secondary fractured-covernous porosity. Increase in the permeability factor with depth is characteristic of carbonate rocks. According to geological-geophysical data available, the reservoir rocks with better capacity-filtration properties are distributed in the zone of the barrier reef. The best reservoir parameters are characteristic of cavernous dolomites and limestones at the Lokachy area and in the region of Lutsk. Reservoir rocks of porous type are practically absent at depths over 2500 m. Here a significant role in improving of collecting properties of rocks belongs to their fracturing. Microfractures are observed in clayed limestones, marls and clay rocks. Under favourable geodynamic conditions the subvertical zones of disconsolidation occur in which composite reservoir rocks with fracture porosity may be formed.

The present day collage of various Silurian basin fragments in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is the result of several orogenic and rifting/drifting episodes. The proper paleogeographic reconstruction of a single, very large Silurian foredeep basin in the context of regional geology has a major impact on the ongoing unconventional shale gas exploration efforts in the region, including Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova. The distal segments of a large Silurian foreland basin associated with the Caledonian collisional orogene, along the perimeter of the East European Craton, can be reasonably followed along strike from NW to SE, from Poland all the way to the Ukrainian Black Sea coast. The foredeep basin sequence onlaps to the NE the various pre-Silurian and crystalline basement units. The Silurian basin of the CEE is interpreted here as a pro-foreland basin, with short-lived (less than 15 m.y.) and extremely rapid (locally more than 1,500 m per m.y.!), accelerating subsidence histories recording a portion of the orogenic history of the broader Caledonian orogeny. Besides the typical subsidence curves and the very prominent onlap of successive Silurian lithostratigraphic units onto the craton, the flexural origin is also supported by the general lack of normal-faulting within the basin, contradicting some interpretations suggesting deposition on the extensional continental margin of the Rheic Ocean. The map-view distribution of the lithofacies within the basin, such as clastic turbidites in the southwestern perimeter of the basin, deepwater shales in the center and neritic carbonates on the northeastern foreland margin, is also consistent with the flexural basin interpretation.
