Tec tonic sub si dence his tory is co her ent across the area stud ied. De vel op ment of the ba sin com menced with an Ediacaran phase of ex ten sion, ini ti ated with the em place ment of rift-re lated vol ca nic rocks and as so ci ated with rapid syn-rift tec tonic sub si dence. Dur ing this event, tec tonic sub si dence in creased to wards the SW, i.e. to wards the edge of the East Eu ro pean Craton, where the Ediacaran rift zone was lo cated. At that time, a rift de vel oped along the whole SW mar gin of the East Eu ro pean Craton from Scan di na via to the Black Sea. De vel op ment of this large extensional ba sin was re lated to the lat est stages of break-up of the Pre cam brian supercontinent Rodinia/Pannotia and ul ti mately the for ma tion of the Tornquist Ocean. The lat est Ediacaran to Late Or do vician tec tonic sub si dence pat tern was char ac ter is tic of the post-rift ther mal sag stage of extensional bas ins. The SW mar gin of the newly formed Baltica, in clud ing the area stud ied, be came a pas sive con ti nen tal mar gin. The late Cam brian up lift and ero sion was pre sum ably re lated to a far-field ef fect of contractional events or intra-plate stresses. Since the Late Or do vi cian, a grad ual change to a collisional tec tonic set ting is ob served across the SW mar gin of Baltica. In the study area, this is in dicated by a sys tem atic in crease in sub si dence rate from Wen lock to Early De vo nian time, cre at ing sub si dence curves with con vex shapes typ i cal of fore land ba sin de vel op ment. The Si lu rian to Early De vo nian Volyn-Podillya-Moldavia Ba sin is in terpreted here as a flex ural foredeep re lated to a Cal edo nian col li sion zone lo cated fur ther to the SW. The prom i nent diachroneity in the ini ti a tion of the foredeep ba sin de vel op ment at a scale of the whole SW mar gin of Baltica is co her ent with a model of oblique col li sion of Avalonia and Baltica. Dur ing the Pragian-Emsian, the ba sin was part of a sys tem of post-collisional Old Red bas ins, with sub si dence driven pre sum ably by lithospheric iso static im bal ance re sult ing from the Cal edo nian col li sion and de vel op ment of an accretionary wedge. Mid dle to Late De vo nian short-term phases of rapid sub sidence in small depocentres might be re garded as an in di ca tion of a transtensional tec tonic re gime.

Lower Palaeozoic petroleum systems of the Baltic Basin in northern Poland: A 3D basin modeling study of selected areas (onshore and offshore)

We have developed a Lower Palaeozoic petroleum systems analysis in the selected zones of the Polish section of the Baltic Basin (onshore and offshore), which we carried out to assess the potential of shale rock formations as unconventional reservoirs. The areas of the Baltic Basin, which we analyzed represent a diversity of shale formations burial depths and thus different advancement of sediments compaction and organic matter transformation. Methods of dynamic petroleum systems modeling were applied with a 3D modeling workflow (PetroMod suite software). We considered an extensive array of data, including results of geochemical and petrophysical laboratory measurements, geophysical borehole data and, in selected locations — 3D seismic data. Five potentially perspective shale rock intervals (Silurian [2], Ordovician [2], and Upper Cambrian [1]) are identified and interpreted in terms of their geochemical and petrophysical properties. We calibrated the petroleum system models in terms of proper reproduction of diagenetic processes (pore pressure and porosity), thermal conditions (vitrinite reflectance, temperature), and kerogen kinetic model (organic matter transformation ratio, types of hydrocarbons generated). The results of the petroleum system simulations reveal that for the predominant part of the analyzed area, the achieved level of kerogen thermal maturity determines the generation of liquid hydrocarbons, which results in the present-day saturation of shale formations mainly with crude oil. We concluded that the highest generation yields as well as present-day hydrocarbons in place are observed for Ordovician Sasino Formation (onshore and offshore), Silurian/Llandovery Jantar member (onshore), and Upper Cambrian (alum shales) formation. Furthermore, a significant variation in the mass/volumes of accumulated hydrocarbons is observed within each of the shale formations being considered.

Dis tri bu tion of the black shale fa cies, pro spec tive for shale gas, and the reef fa cies, pro spec tive for oil, has been stud ied in re spect of palaeoenvironments. The Silu rian se quence has been in ves ti gated in the ter ri tory of Ukraine (Volyn-Podillyan Plate, Dobrogean Foredeep) and cor related with the data on Moldova and Ro ma nia (Moldovian Plat form). The oc cur rence of Si lu rian strata, their thick ness, and petrographic and lithological char ac ter is tics al lowed re con struct ing the dis tri bu tion of open-shelf, reef and la goonal fa cies. The reef fa cies mi grated dur ing the Wen lock-Mid dle Pridoli, shift ing to wards the open sea and back to wards the shore, and there fore has been termed a mi grat ing reef fa cies. Cor re spond ingly, the bound ary be tween the open-shelf and reef fa cies was shift ing. The fa cies dis tri bu tion was con trolled by the transgressive-re gres sive cy cles, which caused the fluc tu a tions of the shelf wa ter depth in dif fer ent time in ter vals of the Si lu rian. The shelf wa ter depth of about 100 m, where the top of the ox ygen-min i mum layer im pinged on the sea bot tom, was the boundary between the open-shelf facies, represented by organic-rich sediments, and the reef build ups.
