Service-oriented computing is now acknowledged as a central paradigm for Internet computing, supported by tremendous research and technology development over the last 10 years. However, the evolution of the Internet, and in particular, the latest Future Internet vision, challenges the paradigm. Indeed, service-oriented computing has to face the ultra large scale and heterogeneity of the Future Internet, which are orders of magnitude higher than those of today's service-oriented systems. This article aims at contributing to this objective by identifying the key research directions to be followed in light of the latest state of the art. This article more specifically focuses on research challenges for service-oriented middleware design, therefore, investigating service description, discovery, access, and composition in the Future Internet of services.

Web service composition has gained tremendous interest with emerging application development. Automatic service composition is a key aspect in overcoming runtime problems that arise due to dynamic nature of runtime environment. In SOA, applications are formed through the combinations of independently developed web services that lead to emergence of different dependencies among the component services. The challenge of web service composition is to manage such kind of dependencies among web services when there is large number of services. In this paper, an inheritance based Bully Election approach is proposed for analyzing dependency among services and generating automatic service composition plan. It also identifies the coordinator service on which the execution of other services is dependent. Experimental result shows that the proposed approach is able to reduce the composition time complexity by including only the selected services on the composition plan.

Pervasive Service Composition (PSC) incorporates service composition and pervasive computing into managing user's everyday activities. A generic Reference Model of Pervasive Service Composition (PSC-RM) is needed for guiding PSC architecture design and implementation. To design PSC-RM, we first investigate and present a user's generic activity model. Then we analyze characteristics of PSC and envision PSC applications. Based on these applications we present requirements and initial design of PSC-RM.
