Service-oriented middleware for the Future Internet: state of the art and research directions

Abstract: Service-oriented computing is now acknowledged as a central paradigm for Internet computing, supported by tremendous research and technology development over the last 10 years. However, the evolution of the Internet, and in particular, the latest Future Internet vision, challenges the paradigm. Indeed, service-oriented computing has to face the ultra large scale and heterogeneity of the Future Internet, which are orders of magnitude higher than those of today's service-oriented systems. This article aims at co… Show more

“…Service-oriented middleware that supports the service-oriented interaction pattern through the provision of proper functionalities for deploying, publishing/discovering and accessing services at runtime, is the main service abstraction 576 model to support service composition for smart objects [56]. In this abstraction model, to create a composite service, a description language is normally used to describe its component services and the interaction between these services in the form of a workflow.…”

“…Semantic service selection is a key technology for building service-based applications of the converging Internet of Services, Internet of Things, and Internet of Interaction [19]. Prominent application domains include semantic business process management, smart health services, cloud manufacturing and manufacturing 4.0, and semantic social multimedia.…”

“…Issarny et al [2] discusses the service discovery from the viewpoint of issues and concerns related to the organization of service description in registries and protocols used for service retrieval. In the context of information organization, the baseline is the proposal of data model in Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) specification [42].…”

“…Now Internet has been evolved into Future Internet in which the services are federated and autonomic networks that provide built-in support for service management, contextualization, mobility, security and resilience are embedded [1]. Future Internet can be defined as the union and cooperation [2] of Internet of Content to promote the creation and consumption of media content of any type and volume [4], the Internet of Services to demonstrate the scenarios of services creation and the operation in the internet [5] and Internet of Things (IoT) to link the physical and virtual objects through communication capabilities [3]. The "Internet of Things" paradigm aims at providing models and mechanisms enabling the creation of networks of "smart things" on a large scale by means of RFID, wireless sensor and actuator networks, where embedded devices are distributed in the physical environment [6].…”
