Deoxyribozymes and bioinformatics: complementary tools to investigate axon regeneration

Abstract: For over 100 years, scientists have tried to understand the mechanisms that lead to the axonal growth seen during development or the lack thereof during regeneration failure after spinal cord injury (SCI). Deoxyribozyme technology as a potential therapeutic to treat SCIs or other insults to the brain, combined with a bioinformatics approach to comprehend the complex protein-protein interactions that occur after such trauma, is the focus of this review. The reader will be provided with information on the select… Show more

“…Kawano et al (2012) summarize the current view of the various glial and fibrotic scar compartments and their cellular sources and describe an elegant in vitro model for manipulating the ECM and fibrotic scarring under defined culture conditions. In the search for a potential therapeutic agent to manipulate ECM and scar formation in SCI, Grimpe (2011) has introduced deoxyribozyme technology as a novel treatment approach in acute CNS injuries. The latter technology is outlined in detail and thoroughly compared with the advantages/disadvantages of ribozymes, short interfering RNA and the antisense-RNA approach.…”
