“…The simplest experimental approach for solving this problem was to study the course of R N A accumulation using 5-fluorodeoxyuridine (FdUrd) to block DNA replication. FdUrd prevents DNA replication by inhibiting thymidylate synthase, the enzyme responsible for converting deoxyuridylate into deoxythymidylate (Follmann 1983). FdUrd effectively blocked DNA replication in Scenedesmus quadricauda cells, while growth processes were not affected by the presence of the inhibitor (Zachleder 1994).…”
