Dental maturation of unilateral cleft lip and palate

Abstract: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is the most common craniofacial abnormality and the fourth most common birth defect in Singapore. Many reports suggest that CLP children have delayed dental development and asymmetrical timing of tooth-pair formation. The aim of this study was to investigate the timing of development of permanent teeth in unilateral CLP (UCLP) children and to compare the findings with non-CLP children in Singapore. A total of 60 UCLP children aged between 5 and 9 years (mean 6.64 ± 0.90 years) and a … Show more

“…Similarly, Eerens et al 16 (2001) reported a slight delay in the dental development of Belgian children. Despite the concordance, both studies contradict most of the previous investigations 7,[9][10][11][12][13]15,[17][18][19][20] , which reported statistically significant delays in the dental development of individuals with cleft lip and palate. Moreover, some studies lack information concerning the performed methodology 7,15 , hampering adequate interpretations.…”

“…In addition, contrarily to previous studies [7][8][9][11][12][13]15,[17][18][19][20] a blinding methodology was applied to avoid potential bias during the image analysis. The blinding methodology plays an important part in the study reliability, since the method of Demirjian et al 14 (1973) presents a certain degree of subjectivity.…”

“…Studies have found that children with CLP had asymmetrical tooth formation that was three to four times more common than those of the control group without CLP. Our earlier study also established that the group with complete UCLP, with a mean age of 6.64 years (standard deviation: 0.90) had a risk of asymmetric tooth‐pair formation that was 3.8 times higher than the non‐CLP group.…”

“…Our earlier study showed that at 5 to 9 years old, dental maturation of children with complete UCLP was significantly delayed compared with children without CLP by a mean value of 0.55 years (standard deviation: 0.75).…”

“…Na literatura existem trabalhos 15 que relatam um atraso na formação dentária de pacientes com fissura labiopalatina quando comparados a pacientes não portadores de fissura, levando a uma erupção também atrasada. Porém, os resultados são inconclusivos em relação a etiopatogenia que ocorre esse atraso.…”
