“…In this study no die tary supplements of sucrose promoted the implantation of S. mutans. As might be ex pected [Krasse, 1965;Edman et al, 1975;Van Houte et al, 1976], the number of re coverable S. mutans cells accordingly de creased after 24 h. It appears that the topi cal application of S. mutans on newly cleansed smooth surfaces affords a reasona bly reliable method to effect the short-time establishment of the organism. Edman et al [1975] also accomplished the establishment of S. mutans by topical application; howev er, these authors did not systematically re move pellicle and plaque prior to implanta tion.…”

“…However, the highly localized man ner in which S. mutans colonizes tooth sur faces in man [Ikeda and Sand ham, 1971;Gibbons et al, 1974;Edman et al, 1975] indicates that at the local level, factors other than dietary sucrose must play a significant part in regulating the intraoral distribution of S. mutans. Particular metabolic condi tions have been considered as ecological de terminants for the preferential colonization of tooth fissures by S. mutans [Ikeda and Sandham, 1971].…”

“…In addition to its inaccuracy, this probing method has been criticized as exacerbating tooth destruction. There appears a need for supplementary test for determining the oral infection level (12,13). The count of dental caries inducing bacteria, Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) have been calculated using several kinds of mitis salivarius agar with sucrose and bacitracin (14)(15)(16)(17)(18).…”
