Effect of the Acquired Pellicle and of Dental Plaque on the Implantation of Streptococcus mutans on Tooth Surfaces in Man

“…In this study no die tary supplements of sucrose promoted the implantation of S. mutans. As might be ex pected [Krasse, 1965;Edman et al, 1975;Van Houte et al, 1976], the number of re coverable S. mutans cells accordingly de creased after 24 h. It appears that the topi cal application of S. mutans on newly cleansed smooth surfaces affords a reasona bly reliable method to effect the short-time establishment of the organism. Edman et al [1975] also accomplished the establishment of S. mutans by topical application; howev er, these authors did not systematically re move pellicle and plaque prior to implanta tion.…”
