Dental caries experience in schoolchildren in fluoridated and non‐fluoridated communities in Western Australia

Abstract: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 1987 to measure the difference in caries experience in schoolchildren between a fluoridated (0.8 mg/L F-) and a non-fluoridated region (0.1-0.4 mg/L F-). 3436 children aged 5-15 yr were examined. Children in the non-fluoridated region had a higher caries experience than those in the fluoridated region. Mean differences were 1.06 dfs (95% CI = 0.66 to 1.47, P less than 0.001) and 0.48 DFS (95% CI = 0.23 to 0.72, P less than 0.001). After adjusting for potential confoun… Show more

“…There were comments on this in some questionnaires, particularly in relation to the use of toothpaste; however, the age at which use of toothpaste was reported to have commenced was very close to that reported by Brown et al (1990) for eastern Australia. It has been shown that recall concerning place of residence is reliable (Grembowski, 1988), and many respondents gave detailed information about the use of supplements, suggesting that this information was reliable; it is consistent with other recent data from Perth and Bunbury (Stockwell et al, 1990). Because the majority of participants who had been exposed to fluoride were from Perth and had always lived there, or had come from other Australian cities that also have fluoridated water, assessing exposure to fluoride from this source was not a problem.…”

“…In the region around the city of Bunbury, 200 km south of Perth, drinking water has never been fluoridated, and natural fluoride levels are low (<0.2 mg/L) (Medcalf and O'Grady, 1983;Stockwell et al, 1990). Here, five DTCs (three in Bunbury, two in outlying smaller towns) were selected, and two classes of children from the nearest school, occasionally supplemented by small numbers of children from other nearby schools, formed the local sample.…”

“…Studies in Ireland and in Western Australia have revealed that such an effect does exist, since the caries experience there was lower in communities with water fluoridation [O'Mullane et al, 1988;Stockwell et al. 1990].…”
