Density of small diameter sensory nerve fibres in endometrium: a semi-invasive diagnostic test for minimal to mild endometriosis

Abstract: The combined analysis of neural markers PGP9.5, VIP and SP could predict the presence of minimal-mild endometriosis with 95% sensitivity, 100% specificity and 97.5% accuracy. To confirm our findings, prospective studies are required.

“…Pain is a major cause of physical, psycho-social, emotional and professional or work-related impairment among women with endometriosis. Recently, several studies indicated specific nerve fibres present in endometriotic tissue with existing parallels between density of small nerve fibres and pain severity [6][7][8]. In a double-blind study, Fraser et al employed diagnostic laparoscopy and subsequent nerve fibre analysis in endometrial biopsies for diagnostic purposes.…”

“…All the studies were approved by national Human Ethics Committees and written informed consent was obtained from all participants. Any reproductive age women undergoing laparoscopy for suspected endometriosis/ pelvic pain/ or infertility and not currently receiving hormonal treatment for at least 3 months prior to laparoscopy [2,[8][9][10][11] were involved in those studies. Different menstrual phases were not regarded to be exclusion criteria because no significant differences were found for density of nerve fibres related to different menstrual phases [10].…”

“…[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Progesterone treatment revealed a decrease in endometrial nerve fibers, but no clinical significance was identified. [17] As a result, further studies were recommended in recent publications for these patient groups.…”
