Dengue Symptoms Significance in Anti-Dengue Drug Development: Road Less Travelled

Abstract: Dengue outbreak has affected rural areas of Delhi-NCR, Haryana widely but it lacks in surveillance. High cases of dengue symptoms were reported in these regions whereas dengue symptoms have been a neglected issue in the anti-dengue drug development. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the status of the dengue infection, a rural issue of Delhi-NCR, Haryana and to identify the significance of dengue symptoms in anti-dengue drug development. The study was conducted when there is high chance of dengue infection … Show more

“…7,8 Dengue NS1 antigen is a highly sensitive marker for acute dengue infections but the test may be negative in some case, particularly when it is performed >7 days of illness onset, hence solely relying on this tool for diagnostic purpose is not advised. 9 Clinical suspicion should be sufficient, in an appropriate demographic setting, to initiate treatment, in order to prevent avoidable complications.…”

Later, bleeding from gastrointestinal tract and sites of trauma, thrombocytopenia, pleural effusion, abdominal pain, restlessness, vomiting and a sudden reduction in temperature, adynamia and fainting can occur [ 7 , 21 ]. Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, elevation of serum aminotransferase level are seen.…”

“…Detection of IgM, IgG antibodies, NS1 ELISA or duplex Real time polymerase chain reaction during the acute phase are used as diagnostic tests. Virus can be isolated from the blood by mosquito inoculation or mosquito cell culture [ 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Dengue NS1 antigenemia is detectable within 24 h and may persist for nine days following the onset of illness. Simultaneous testing for dengue NS1 along with anti-dengue IgM/IgG provides the diagnostic potential for both early and late dengue disease3. These serological and molecular markers are used not only to confirm the diagnosis but also to categorize the disease severity or increase in risk of progression to more severe forms of dengue infection.…”
