Dengue 2 genotypes in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico

Abstract: To genetically characterize dengue 2 (DEN-2) viruses in Oaxaca, Mexico, the C protein, and a portion of the prM protein genes of 8 isolates from the 2001 DEN epidemic were sequenced. The sequences were compared to those of prototype DEN-2 viruses from various parts of the world. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the 2001 isolates of DEN-2 were of the American/Asian genotype and were most similar to the Jamaica and Venezuelan isolates MARA3, LARD1996 and LARD1910. Molecular analyses confirmed the origin of t… Show more

“…These results confirmed the circulation of the four serotypes in the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz, Mexico (36). This study also showed that DENV-2 is present in serum at a higher frequency, consistent with previous assessments of the prevalence of these serotypes in the epidemics of 2000–2001 [37] and 2005–2006 [20,21]. …”

“…Fluorescence variability was very low in our assays, suggesting this technology will be very useful for DENV diagnoses. Detection of two cases of dual infections (DENV-2 and -1; and DENV-2 and -3) confirm the feasibility of using this microarray assay to diagnose dual infections (Figure 4) [20,21,44]. …”

“…DENV-2 strains of the American/Asian genotype circulating in Oaxaca, Mexico, are probably from South-East Asia [70]. The 2001 isolates of American/Asian DENV-2 were most similar to the Jamaican and Venezuelan isolates MARA3, LARD1996 and LARD1910.…”

“…7,8,10 Several factors could be involved in this increase in the number of DEN cases in Oaxaca, such as the viral genotype, vector competence, and the socioeconomic level of the population. The Asian-American genotype of DEN2 was detected in the year 2000 20,21 in the state and this was the main causative agent of the outbreak in the state of Yucatan in 2002. 22 The increase in the number of DEN cases in Oaxaca could be related to the circulation of this relatively new genotype although DEN1 and DEN4 were the most frequently found serotypes in our serological study.…”
