“…The qualitative vessels features corroborate Pollito (2004) for the presence of simple perforation plates and for the type of pits. The vessel diameter was related positively with temperature (table 3), indicating that higher temperatures, such as occur at CES, are associated with larger vessel sizes.…”

“…Molecular phylogenetic studies have helped circumscribe the genus and evaluate the monophyly and relationships of previously proposed taxonomic sections (Berry et al, 2005a, b;Berry, 2009, 2010;Riina et al, 2009Riina et al, , 2010van Ee et al, 2006van Ee et al, , 2008van Ee et al, , 2011Caruzo et al, 2011). Wood anatomical studies in Croton have largely been restricted to descriptive work (Loureiro, 1968;Hayden and Hayden, 1994;Luchi, 2004), new species descriptions (Berry et al, 2005a for Brasiliocroton;Riina et al, 2010) or detailed treatments of groups of species (Pollito, 2004;Mennega, 2005), as well as studies of laticifers in the wood of several species (Rudall, 1987(Rudall, , 1989(Rudall, , 1994Wiedenhoeft et al, 2009). Wiedenhoeft (2008) was the first study to tackle the evolution of wood anatomy in Croton in an explicitly phylogenetic context, using parsimony-based phylogenetic comparative methods.…”
