Dendritic cell biology and cancer therapy

Abstract: Dendritic cells (DCs) are nature's best antigen-presenting cells. They possess attributes that allow them to effectively fulfill the requirements for priming/activating T cells and mediating tumor-specific immune responses. In this review, emphasis is placed on those aspects of DC biology that best illustrate their usefulness in immunotherapy of cancer. Culture, maturation, and polarization conditions for human DC are discussed, as are strategies for antigen-loading of DCs and for their delivery to patients wi… Show more

“…The expression of surface antigens is known to depend on the maturation stage of the DCs. TNF-a has been shown to cause DCs to mature [Whiteside and Odoux, 2004]. NB4 cells did not express DC markers on their surfaces by the addition of TNF-a in the absence of PA (data not shown).…”

“…Furthermore, NTM causes primary infections in patients with no history of respiratory illness (31)(32)(33)(34)(35), and what is of greater concern is the increasing frequency of infection in recent years (30,31,35,36) in these patients. Therefore, it is important to find an efficient treatment that succeeds in the cure of mycobacterial infections, with shorter periods of treatment and lower systemic drug dosage.…”

“…DCs are the most potent APCs mediating the effective in vitro and in vivo immune responses [20,21]. These cells are used for antigen-specific immunotherapy of cancer because they are the most efficient APCs that can induce primary immune responses [22,23].…”
