The present study was performed to detect the presence of contaminating microorganisms in two commonly available herbal samples (Centella asiatica and Aloe vera) collected from different areas of Dhaka city, Bangladesh and to assess their antibacterial activity. Out of twenty samples (having ten samples of each categories) studied; the range of total viable bacterial count was approximately 10 3 to 10 8 cfu/g. Presence of Staphylococcus aureus was found in all the samples, followed by Klebsiella spp. in 15 samples, Pseudomonas spp. in 14 samples, Bacillus spp. in 12 samples, Escherichia coli in 9 samples and Vibrio spp. in 7 samples. Salmonella spp. was detected in neither of the sample. 17 samples showed a high fungal load up to 10 7 cfu/g. Antibacterial activity of C. asiatica samples was demonstrated against eight laboratory isolates. Only four C. asiatica samples showed activity against Klebsiella spp. On the contrary, Aloe vera samples (12-14) showed antibacterial activity only against Staphylococcus spp.

Cosmetics especially baby products should be safe as children are immunocompromised which means their immune system is not developed enough to combat infections caused by the presence of any pathogenic bacteria. Different factors like chemical composition of cosmetics, handling and storage conditions can influence the chance of contamination of cosmetic products. This study aimed to evaluate the microbiological quality of different commercially available baby cosmetics such as body lotion, body wash or soap, baby shampoo, baby oil of different popular brands sold in Dhaka city. In the current investigation four different brands of cosmetics were subjected to bacteriological and mycological screening. Total viable bacteria and fungal load in all the samples of Brand 1 was in average of 105 cfu/g which exceeded the acceptable limit. The samples were found to contain pathogenic bacteria as well, especially Klebsiella spp. The findings indicate that the quality Brand 1 products were not satifactory and might cause harm to children and other consumers. Microbial load of other brands fell within the acceptable limit which indicate their good quality. The incidence of microorganisms in Brand 1 might be due to contamination during the production process or storage under unhygienic condition. Therefore in order to avoid infections in children due to microbial contamination of cosmetics items it is essential to take precautions during production process and storage in appropriate conditions and avoiding use of cosmetics products on damaged skin. In Bangladesh cosmetics are being produced disregarding the Good Manufacturing Practices. So, this study aimed to test the level and nature of bacterial contamination of such cosmetics. A total of 27 cosmetics comprising eight lipsticks, nine powders, and ten creams were bought from New Market and Tejgaon areas of Dhaka city and tested. Bacteria was detected in 85.2% of samples. Majority of the samples (77.8%) exceeded the limit given by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Both Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Salmonella spp.) and Gram-positive bacteria (species of Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Listeria monocytogenes) were identified. Hemolysis was observed in 66.7% Gram-positive and 25% Gram-negative bacteria. Multidrug resistance was tested in 165 randomly selected isolates. Every species of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria exhibited varying levels of multidrug resistance. The highest levels of antibiotic resistance were in broad-spectrum antibiotics (ampicillin, azithromycin, cefepime, ciprofloxacin and meropenem) and narrow-spectrum Gram-negative antibiotics (aztreonam and colistin). Multidrug resistance was 12–78% in Gram-negative bacteria and 12–100% in Gram-positive bacteria. Coagulase and DNase were identified in 97.5% and 5.1% of Staphylococcus aureus isolates respectively. Our findings indicate that these cosmetics pose a risk to the public’s health.
