Demonstrating the model nature of the high-temperature superconductorHgBa2CuO4+δ

Abstract: The compound HgBa 2 CuO 4+δ (Hg1201) exhibits a simple tetragonal crystal structure and the highest superconducting transition temperature (T c ) among all single Cu-O layer cuprates, with T c = 97 K (onset) at optimal doping. Due to a lack of sizable single crystals, experimental work on this very attractive system has been significantly limited. Thanks to a recent breakthrough in crystal growth, such crystals have now become available. [1] Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to identify suitable heat tr… Show more

“…The Hg1201 single crystals used in this study were grown by a flux method [11] and heat-treated to the desired doping levels [12]. The total mosaic spread of the two primary samples, OP95 (mass ~ 2.0 g) and UD65 (~ 1.8 g), is ~2° FWHM.…”

“…Our measurements were carried out on three samples made of co-aligned crystals, which were grown by a self-flux method [11] and free from substantial macroscopic impurity phases and inhomogeneity (SI Section 2). Hg1201 exhibits the highest value of T c of all cuprates with one copper-oxygen plane per unit cell, has a simple tetragonal structure, and is furthermore thought to be relatively free of disorder effects [12,13]. The scattering wave vector is quoted as Q = Ha* + Kb* + Lc* ≡ (H,K,L) in reciprocal lattice units (r.l.u.).…”

“…We argue below that this new component is likely a generic property of all cuprates and is connected to the newly identified anisotropic susceptibility 6 . Two new HgBa 2 CuO 4+δ single crystals with T c =45 K (UN45) and 85 K (OV85) were prepared following the method described previously 10,11 . The experimental details of exciting, recording and referencing the 63 Cu NMR signals are identical to those in Ref.…”
