Magnetic vortex lattice in HgBa2CuO4+δobserved by small-angle neutron scattering

Abstract: We report the direct observation of the magnetic vortex lattice in the model high-temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO 4+δ . Using small-angle neutron scattering on high-quality crystals, we observe two equal domains of undistorted triangular vortex lattices well-aligned with the tetragonal crystallographic axes. The signal decreases rapidly with increasing magnetic field and vanishes above 0.4 Tesla, which we attribute to a crossover from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional vortex system, similar to previ… Show more

“…Materials where such a field-driven hexagonal to square VL transition have been observed includes members of the nickelborocarbide superconductors [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22], V 3 Si [23,24], LSCO [25], CeCoIn 5 [26,27], YBCO [4,28], and NCCO [29]. Notable exceptions to this are BSCCO [30,31], and more recently HgBa 2 CuO 4+δ [32]. However, in these two compounds the scattered intensity decreases very rapidly with increasing field, greatly limiting the range of vortex densities over which the VL can be imaged.…”

“…Such crystals are of rather high quality, as indicated by the high attainable ZFC/FC ratio 34 and the ability to observe the vortex lattice via small-angle neutron scattering. 35 Four underdoped Hg1201 crystals had been studied in our previous work. 5 The new data reported here were obtained on a fifth underdoped crystal with T c = 75 ± 2 K and an array of about 40 nearly optimally doped crystals (T c = 95 ± 2 K, same as in ref.…”

“…Samples of comparable quality to those investigated in the present work have enabled stateof-the-art electronic Raman scattering, optical spectroscopy, and hard x-ray experiments [13,[31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. Such Hg1201 samples feature a small density of vortex pinning centers [40], which has enabled the observation of a magnetic vortex lattice [41]. This paper is organized as follows: In Sec.…”
