The inappropriate use and indiscriminate disposal of antibiotics has become a menace worldwide. The incomplete removal of these contaminants from wastewater treatment plants has also contributed to this. This study presents the biodegradation of two veterinary antibiotics; ciprofloxacin (CIP) and enrofloxacin (ENRO). Kinetics models were explored to understand the dynamics of biodegradation in an anaerobic digestion process. This was carried out in batch reactors under various operating conditions: pH, organic loading rate (OLR), and antibiotic concentration. The influence of the parameters was investigated using a response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box–Behnken experimental design of 15 runs. The data obtained were fitted on a polynomial function model. OLR and pH exhibited a synergistic and antagonistic effect in the response models developed, with a high correlation regression coefficient (R2; 0.9834–0.9875) close to 1 at a 95% confidence level. The optimum conditions obtained from the RSM numerical optimization were pH (6), OLR (2 kgCOD·m−3·days−1), and an antibiotic concentration of 75%, which gave the removal of CIP, ENRO, and COD, respectively, as 80%, 83%, and 73% at a desirability function of 85%. The kinetics study shows that the biodegradation of antibiotics was well fitted on a first-order model (R2; 0.9885–0.9978) with rate constants ranging from 0.0695 to 0.96 days−1.

The detection of quinolone antibiotics is an important research hotspot for protecting human health. Herein, a three‐dimensional metal–organic framework with the formula of {[Co5(TPT)2(BPDC)3(μ3‐O)2(H2O)4]·8MeCN·3DMF}n (NS‐3, TPT = tris(4‐pyridyl)‐1,3,5‐triazin, H2BPDC = 1,4‐benzenedicarboxylic acid) has been successfully prepared through solvothermal method. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis revealed that three‐dimensional NS‐3 can be viewed as an eight‐connected sqc4 net with pentanuclear [Co5(μ3‐O)2]6+ cluster as metal nodes. Importantly, when norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and enrofloxacin were added in NS‐3 ethanol suspension, the luminescence intensity of NS‐3 at 333 nm was obviously decreased while new emission peaks clearly emerged, indicating that NS‐3 can be a potential rare fluorescent detection to recognize quinolone antibiotics in ethanol. Additionally, NS‐3 exhibits high sensitivity to norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and enrofloxacin with a limit of detection of 43, 34, and 139 nM, respectively, which is superior to most of the reported metal–organic frameworks.

Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria invasion have become a serious threat to human life and health. In this study, polyhexamethylguanidine (PHMG) is anchored onto sesbania gum (SG) by an oxidation reaction coupled with the Schiff base reaction to endow antibacterial function. By the assistance of the oxidation reaction using sodium periodate (NaIO 4 ) as an oxidizing agent, the oxidized SG (OSG) forms and contributes to the generation of a platform with active sites for further antibacterial modification with PHMG. Then PHMG as antibacterial ingredient covalently bind on OSG, which helps to achieve SG-PHMG. After the colony counting method and inhibition zone test, SG-PHMG shows excellent antibacterial ability against 10 8 CFU mL −1 of Escherichia coli (E. coli). More interestingly, the grafting of PHMG makes SG more hydrophilic, and allows SG-PHMG fully contact with bacteria, as a result showing excellent antibacterial activity. It is believed that this strategy has great potential for the antibacterial-associated applications.
