"Delivering the Implication of Place-keeping on Long-term Island Landscape Management

Background and objective: There have been an increasing number of migrant women in Korea. However, they are facing many difficulties in terms of language, psychology, poverty and many other things. Moreover, many mental health problems have emerged since COVID-19, to which migrant women have been more vulnerable. Alternatively, parks and green spaces have been a key to recovering mental health. In line with this, long-term management of green spaces has been raised as an issue to help promote people's health and empowerment. However, we have little evidence that the issue also conveys the empowerment of migrants and positivity through participation in park and green space management. Therefore, this study aims at 1) understanding migrant women's perception toward participation in park and green space management, 2) analyzing the correlation between empowerment and place-keeping, and 3) deriving implications.Methods: To address the objectives, this study conducts 1) a theoretical review of empowerment and place-keeping of migrant women through literature review and 2) a non-face-to-face survey targeting 108 migrant women. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS 26.Results: The results are as follows: 1) migrant women have highly positive perceptions toward participation in park and green space management, with statistical significance in funding and governance depending on the marital status, and 2) there is a significant correlation between place-keeping and empowerment in role and expression. This means that increasing the role and expression in empowerment can promote more active participation in park and green space management.Conclusion: In conclusion, in order to improve the empowerment of migrant women, they should be guided to actively participate in park and green space management and provided with the opportunity to participate in policy-making.

An Analysis on the Long-term Management of Urban Tree Carbon Reduction ‘Forestry Inventory Analysis’ towards Climate Change Adaptation

Background and objective: Climate change and its impact on carbon storage in urban trees is a topic that has received increasing attention. Related studies focusing on data collection and analysis-based programs, such as the Forestry Inventory Analysis (FIA) programme in the US, have presented remarkable approaches to obtaining integrated analysis estimates and its management structure from a long-term perspective. This study explored the FIA programme in the context of long-term management in relation to tree carbon-related data collection and analysis.Methods: For the analysis, this study employed bibliometric methods (network using VOSviewer and coordinated analysis using NVivo) and an analytical framework. The case study is based on FIA-related driver changes of the keywords 'carbon' and 'tree' as well as the FIA management structure, using place-keeping theory as an integrated analytical framework and as the approach to long-term management.Results: Analysing FIA shows long-term management which has run since 2010, revealing key issues and significant terms in six dimensions of place-keeping analytical frameworks: public-private partnership-based data collection and political support in policy, central and local government-integrated fundraising from income generation, active governance-formed community activities in governance, alliance-structured networks in partnerships, integrated or unified estimated structures in evaluation, and maintenance. The case analysis reveals the necessity of a long-term management approach that incorporates a carbon storage estimate-focused policy, integrated income-partnerships, expanded active governance, Private Public Community Partnership (PPCP) multi-sector partnerships, and data platform settings.Conclusion: Newly emerging urban tree management structures should be reflected first on establishing an integrated carbon neutrality-based estimating system and secondly, on building long-term management approaches to the system. This will ultimately allow for climate change adaptation to approach carbon neutrality.

Understanding Drivers of Changes in Green Space Assessments: Focusing on the Green Flag Award

Background and objective: The benefits of green spaces are starting to be recognized, particularly after the emergence of COVID-19. However, only well-managed green spaces deliver positive benefits. To maintain green spaces, various assessment tools have been developed. The Green Flag Award (GFA), which is the UK’s national audit tool, is focused on the structure and criteria of green spaces assessment. However, we do not know about the changes that drive our understandings of well-managed green spaces, impacts of the GFA, or changes in other assessment tools. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand the changes that drive the development of green space assessment tools, with a focus on the GFA, to deliver a framework for the long-term management of these spaces.Methods: This study employed the Protocol and Reporting result with Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, and Analysis (PSALSAR) and Develop frameworks, as well as the assessment-focused place-keeping analytical framework. The PSALSAR framework was used to ensure accuracy, systematisation, exhaustiveness, and reproducibility. The assessment-focused place-keeping analytical framework was employed to understand the contribution of green space assessment tools in the long-term management of these spaces.Results: First, well-managed green spaces (GS) were positively associated with quality of life, which is a widely known fact. However, the approach to managing GS in the long term is a key issue. Second, the GFA had great impacts on the ability to manage GS well by providing developed domains and reflecting contemporary GS issues. Third, drivers of GS assessment tools include the persistence and importance of conventional maintenance, emphasis on accessibility by expanding practical boundaries, the inevitability of enhancing community involvement, and diversity of involvement in the judging process. Lastly, assessment-focused, place-keeping analytical frameworks imply that approaches to long-term management should be contextualised based on policy, funding, governance, partnership, and maintenance.Conclusion: Understanding changes that drive GS assessment and its association with GS management should be prioritised. This study concludes that approaches to GS assessment should be framed in the context of long-term management, underscored by understanding contemporary GS issues.
