Delivering and using 3D models on the web: are we ready?

Abstract: Abstract:Digital technologies are now mature for producing high quality digital replicas of Cultural Heritage (CH) assets. The research results produced in the last decade ignited an impressive evolution and consolidation of the technologies for acquiring high-quality digital three-dimensional (3D) models, encompassing both geometry and color. What remains still an open problem is how to deliver those data and related knowledge to our society. The web is nowadays the main channel for the dissemination of knowl… Show more

“…Using the DEM product derived in this study we exactly identified relatively flat areas and assigned them with elevation ( Figure 13), which provides quantitative indicators of the development of stepped glacial cirque. Recent developments in web-based 3D technologies have enabled interactive visualisation and analysis of large 3D point clouds which in turn enhances communication of the scientific results to wider audience [62]. These reasons motivated us to generate a stand-alone LiDAR Web portal enabling other researchers, professionals or public to explore the dataset without any need for special skills in computer graphics, geographic information science, installation of a special software or any additional plugins.…”

“…Among the software options that can be used to publish 3D models are Sketchfab 1 or p3d.in (Fig. 5), among others (Scopigno, Callieri, Dellepiane, Ponchio & Potenziani, 2017).…”
