Delineation of Nocardia farcinica by Delayed Type Skin Reactions on Guinea Pigs

Abstract: SUMMARYAn immunological method based on the specificity of delayed-type skin reactions on guinea-pigs has been used for comparing 17 Nocardia strains. By this method, 4 isolates labelled Nocardia farcinica, four labelled N. asteroides and I strain labelled N. blackwellii could be grouped together with the type strain of N. farcinica. Three other strains labelled N. farcinica were clearly distinct from this group of 10 strains. A strain of N. asteroides used previously as reference strain for this species was c… Show more

“…Rejection of this name was proposed, and the reason of the rejection was already stated (35). The taxon Kyoto-I group was defined by Tsukamura in 1969 (23), and the distinctness of the taxon Kyoto-I group was supported by many investigators (3,4,8,13,14,17,19,21,29,38). The distinctness of the taxon was shown also in the present study (Figs.…”

“…farcinica was once identified as N. asteroides [5,8], but later it was differentiated from N. asteroides by both serological [15] and numerical [26] analyses. Recently, Lechevalier et al [14] reported that N. farcinica contained mycolic acid as did the Mycobacterium and hence it should be transferred to the genus Mycobacterium.…”

“…infections. The heterogeneity within the species N. asteroides has been well documented by numerical phenetic (196,204,431,512,596,598), genetic (174,402), and immunologic (365,449,472) (518). Also, as suggested for N. farcinica infections, infections with N. nova may be more common than is presently suspected; however, the successful detection of these newly recognized species of microorganisms is dependent upon the performance of appropriate isolation and characterization techniques (621 (510).…”
