Delignification of Cistus ladanifer Biomass by Organosolv and Alkali Processes

Abstract: Residues of Cistus ladanifer obtained after commercial steam distillation for essential oil production were evaluated to produce cellulose enriched solids and added-value lignin-derived compounds. The delignification of extracted (CLRext) and extracted and hydrothermally pretreated biomass (CLRtreat) was studied using two organosolv processes, ethanol/water mixtures (EO), and alkali-catalyzed glycerol (AGO), and by an alkali (sodium hydroxide) process (ASP) under different reaction conditions. The phenolic com… Show more

“…However, using the same extracted solid (E2‐solid), when the pretreatment temperature increased up to 130 °C (P2), 52% biomass was solubilized and the delignification yield increased up to 43%. This positive effect of the temperature in the organosolv ethanol process agrees with that reported for other lignocellulosic materials such as Cistus ladanifer biomass, [ 15 ] Eucalyptus nitens , [ 34 ] wheat straw, [ 35 ] or sugarcane bagasse. [ 36 ]…”

“…[ 45,46 ] Alves‐Ferreira et al. [ 15 ] also used CZE to characterize phenolics from depolymerized lignin and found vanillic acid and gallic acid as the major compounds in the organic liquor of Cistus ladanifer biomass, confirming that the composition in phenolic compounds depends mainly on the biomass origin.…”

“…It is also a source of renewable compounds that have a broad spectrum of applications in different sectors, such as in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries. The work by Alves-Ferreira and coworkers [4] was focused on the lignin obtained from Cistus ladanifer, one of the most important natural shrubs in the Mediterranean basin that occupies nearly two million hectares in the Iberian Peninsula. The main goal of the process was to determine the operational conditions for the delignification of this feedstock to produce a cellulose-rich solid and a liquid in which the phenolic compounds derived from the lignin fraction can be obtained.…”
