Delayed outcome from surgically treated patients with benign nerve associated tumors of the extremities larger than 5 cm

Abstract: We conclude that the complete resection of large SNABTE, excepting lipofibromas and some neurofibromas, is always possible and associated with an improved outcome. The nerve preservation should be attempted in all cases, particularly in those with conserved functionality of a major nerve trunk.

“…Recently, a cohort of just seven paediatric patients with eight peripheral nerve tumours has been published [ 16 ]. Furthermore, purely larger paediatric series do not exist; in mixed series, paediatric cases are not evaluated separately [ 6 9 , 18 , 21 , 27 ]. Due to the rare nature of peripheral nerve sheath tumours in children and its association with rare genetic pathologies like neurofibromatosis, only limited data exists.…”

“…The aim of surgical treatment of a symptomatic schwannoma is total to gross total excision of the tumor along with preservation of the affected nerve and its function, particularly in patients with conserved functionality of a major nerve trunk. 2 , 4 Techniques for endoscopic resection of schwannomas have been reported. 1 , 3 The purpose of this Technical Note is to describe the details of nerve-preserving endoscopically assisted resection of a schwannoma of the radial nerve of the arm.…”
