Propolis is one of the bee products that widely used in health therapy. However, there has no study evaluating the developmental toxicity of propolis. This study was aimed to analyze the effect of propolis administration during pregnancy on fetal development. The pregnant mice were divided into five groups including control group (Tween 80 1%), low-dose (380 mg/kg b.wt.) and high-dose (1400 mg/kg b.wt.) of water extract of propolis from Banten (WEB), and low-dose (380 mg/kg b.wt.) and high-dose (1400 mg/kg b.wt.) of ethanol extract of propolis from South Sulawesi (EES). Propolis was administered for 18 days of gestation and then sacrificed to analyze the fetal development by examining external and skeletal abnormalities. The histopathological examination of placenta was also conducted. The result showed both low-dose groups did not inhibit fetal development. However, the high-dose of EES significantly reduced the weight, crown-rump of fetuses and increased the number of resorption (p < 0.05). Fetal weight was the only significantly reduced parameter of fetal growth in the highdose group of WEB (p < 0.05). The histopathological examination of placenta showed a reduction of labyrinth development in both high-dose groups. Dose of 380 mg/kg dose of Indonesian propolis is relatively safe for consumption during pregnancy.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of noni consumption on risk factors for cardiovascular disease, fasting glucose and hepatic and renal function in rats fed a high-fat diet. Methods: 18 Wistar rats were divided into three groups. Group control (C) was fed with high-fat diet and water. Group's noni juice (NJ) and noni infusion (NI) received the same diet and noni juice and infusion, respectively, for 4 weeks. After this time were assessed anthropometric measurements, adiposity, organ weights and biochemical measurements. Results: Groups NJ and NI had higher waist circumference compared to group C (C=11.0 cm, NJ=12.8 cm and NI=14.0 cm, p<0.05), lower serum creatinine (C=0.8 mg/dL, NJ=0.2 mg/dL and NI=0.3 mg/dL, p<0.05), and higher blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio (C=92.7, NJ=349.3 and NI=230.4, p<0.05). Noni infusion consumption promoted higher serum total cholesterol (C=59.7 mg/dL, NJ=60.1 mg/dL and NI=99.8 mg/dL, p<0.05) and LDL (C=48.5 mg/dL, NJ=42.0 mg/dL and NI=78.7 mg/dL, p<0.05). Conclusion: Consumption of noni, either as juice or as infusion, promoted higher waist circumference and blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio. ABSTRACT Introduction: Preeclampsia is a disorder which usually occurs in normotensive women and characterized by hypertension. Preeclampsia often causes morbidity and mortality in both mother and fetus. Lots of deaths have been caused by preeclampsia every year. Thus, good and proper treatment need to be done. The aim of this writing is to find out and make a literature review about preeclampsia’s herbal-based treatment which is safe for pregnant women. Discussion: Many factors take part in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, including increased oxidative stress and decreased nitric oxide (NO). Increased oxidative stress can cause placental dysfunction which will cause clinical manifestations of preeclampsia. Decreased NO can also cause clinical manifestations of preeclampsia. Scopoletin antioxidant from Morinda citrifolia fruit extract is able to prevent cell damage caused by oxidative stress and prevent inactivation of NO due to free radicals. Scopoletin was proven to significantly decrease blood pressure in rats with oxidative stress-related hypertension (PNL) and to significantly increase NO in the PNL group and the general hypertension group (PN). Conclusion: Treatment of preeclampsia can be done by scopoletin antioxidant, resulting in the effect on systolic and diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure. Scopoletin also increases NO, resulting in a vasodilation effect. This writing is expected to be a help in advancing the treatment of preeclampsia in the future.
