Degradation of Sol-Gel Acrylic Coatings Based on Si and Zr Investigated Using Electrochemical Impedance, Infrared and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopies

Abstract: This study aimed to synthesise and characterise two types of sol-gel acrylic coatings: one based on Si and the other based on Si and Zr. These coatings, which served as a barrier for corrosion protection of aluminium, were synthesised by sol-gel methodology using silicon precursors tetraethyl orthosilicate and organically modified silicon precursor 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, without and with the addition of zirconium(IV) n-propoxide chelated with methacrylic acid. The synthesis process was followed … Show more

“…In addition, coatings containing zirconium in the sol-gel network further improve the silane matrix's coating properties [13][14][15]. This was confirmed in Si-O-Zr (Si/Zr) hybrid coatings based on tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MAPTMS), zirconium(IV) n-propoxide (ZTP), and methacrylic acid (MAA) [11,[16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…Conventional sol-gel synthesis, also applied in several examples on zirconium conversion coatings, [88][89][90][91] most often includes alkoxy precursors, enabling fine-tuning of hydrolytic rate and path through the ratio of alkoxy precursors to water as well as the addition of various complexing agents. 81 This leads to separated sol and gel stages.…”

“…However, after hydrolysis and condensation of OCL-modified precursors bearing reactive units such as polymerizable carbon bonds, crosslinking or curing follows in the presence of heat or UV light and a radical initiator/curing agent such as azobisisobutyronitrile and dibenzoyl peroxide is required to form hybrid polymers. These OCL-derived hybrid polymers have been applied to various fields such as optics [90,91], anti-corrosion coatings [92], etc. The preparation conditions and essential structural elements that have been used in some applications are summarized in Table 2.…”
